Audemars Piguet, the company
Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, a village in the Vallée de Joux, and it is still controlled by descendants of the two founding families. That continuity is unusual: of the three houses collectors call the Holy Trinity, Audemars Piguet is the one that has never been sold. 01Who founded Audemars Piguet?
Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company. Both were watchmakers from the Vallée de Joux who had trained in complicated movements. Audemars built the movements, Piguet regulated and finished them and handled the commercial side. The partnership was formalised as Audemars, Piguet & Cie in 1881.
02When was Audemars Piguet founded?
1875, which makes it one of the oldest watch manufacturers still operating under its original family control. The company marked its 150th anniversary in 2025. The formal partnership under the Audemars Piguet name followed in 1881.
03Where was Audemars Piguet founded?
In Le Brassus, a village in the Vallée de Joux in the Swiss canton of Vaud. The company has never moved. The regleur and the commercial half of the partnership, born in 1853. He regulated and finished the movements Audemars produced and took responsibility for selling them. The division of labour between the two is the reason the company carries both names rather than one.
06Who owns Audemars Piguet today?
Descendants of the two founding families. Audemars Piguet Holding SA is a private company and the shares have never been sold outside that circle. Olivier Audemars, a fourth-generation descendant of Jules Louis Audemars, sits on the board as vice chairman.
07Is Audemars Piguet still family owned?
Yes, and it is the only member of the Holy Trinity that can say so. Patek Philippe is owned by the Stern family, who bought it in 1932 rather than founding it. Vacheron Constantin belongs to the Richemont group. Audemars Piguet has been held by the founding families continuously since 1875.
08Is Audemars Piguet publicly traded?
No. Audemars Piguet has never been listed on any exchange and its shares are not available to buy. It publishes no detailed accounts and is under no obligation to. Exposure to the brand comes from owning the watches, which is the market Hollywood Gems works in.
09Is Audemars Piguet part of a luxury group?
No. It is independent, which separates it from most of the industry. Vacheron Constantin, IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre sit within Richemont; Hublot sits within LVMH. Audemars Piguet answers to its own board rather than to a group.
10Who is the CEO of Audemars Piguet?
Ilaria Resta took over as chief executive on 1 January 2024, succeeding François-Henry Bennahmias after his twelve years in the role. 11How do you pronounce Audemars Piguet?
Roughly oh-duh-MAR pee-GAY. Both names are French, so the final consonants stay silent: no S on Audemars, no T on Piguet. Collectors shorten it to AP in conversation, which is why the monogram appears on the clasp.
12What does AP stand for?
Audemars Piguet, the surnames of the two founders. The initials appear as a monogram on bracelet clasps and in the brand's own marketing. There is no meaning beyond the two names.
13What does Audemars Piguet mean?
Nothing beyond the founders' family names. Both Audemars and Piguet are common surnames in the Vallée de Joux, where watchmaking families intermarried for generations. The name describes who made the watches rather than what they are.
14Is Audemars Piguet Swiss?
Yes. The company was founded in Switzerland, has never operated from anywhere else, and manufactures entirely within the country. Every watch carries the Swiss Made designation on the dial.
15What is Le Brassus?
The village in the Vallée de Joux where Audemars Piguet was founded and still has its headquarters. It sits at around 1,000 metres in the Jura mountains near the French border, and its population is measured in the low thousands. Several of the most technically ambitious watch manufacturers in Switzerland operate within a few miles of it.
16What is the Vallée de Joux?
A high valley in the Swiss Jura, historically too cold to farm through winter, which is why its families turned to watch components. It became the centre of complicated watchmaking in Switzerland. The concentration of skill there is the reason so many houses either operate in the valley or source movements from it.
17How many watches does Audemars Piguet make a year?
Around 50,000, with the company citing a figure near 53,000 for a recent year. For comparison, Rolex is estimated to produce over a million. That gap is much of why a Royal Oak is difficult to buy at retail while a Datejust is not.
18How much revenue does Audemars Piguet make?
Audemars Piguet is private and publishes no detailed accounts. Reported figures and industry estimates put annual revenue in the billions of Swiss francs, having grown several times over across the last decade on broadly flat production. Those numbers come from analysts and press reporting rather than from company statements.
19Is Audemars Piguet bigger than Patek Philippe?
The two are close in scale and both keep production deliberately limited, in the region of 50,000 to 70,000 watches a year each. Neither publishes audited figures, so any ranking rests on estimates. What is clear is that both produce a fraction of what Rolex does.
20What is the Audemars Piguet logo?
The full name set in a serif typeface, usually with the AP monogram alongside it. The monogram appears on bracelet clasps and on the crown of many references. Unlike Rolex, Audemars Piguet has no emblem: the wordmark and the octagonal bezel do the work.
21Why does Audemars Piguet use the AP monogram?
Because the full name is long, French and frequently mispronounced, and two letters travel better. The monogram also gives the brand a mark that reads at a glance on a clasp, where the full wordmark would not fit legibly.
22Is Audemars Piguet one of the Holy Trinity?
Yes. Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin form the group collectors call the Holy Trinity, or the big three of traditional Swiss watchmaking. The grouping is informal and rests on age, complication capability and finishing rather than on anything official.
23What is the Holy Trinity of watchmaking?
Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin, the three houses traditionally placed at the top of Swiss watchmaking for their work in complications and hand finishing. The term is collector shorthand rather than an industry designation, and there is no shortage of argument about whether it still describes the market accurately.
24Did Audemars Piguet survive the quartz crisis?
Narrowly, and the Royal Oak is why. By 1971 cheap accurate quartz watches were taking the market apart and a small manufacture in Le Brassus had no obvious answer. The decision to build an expensive steel sports watch was a gamble against the direction the industry was moving, and it worked.
25What is the Audemars Piguet Foundation?
A charitable foundation created by the company in 1992, focused on forest conservation and youth education. It funds reforestation and habitat projects internationally. It is separate from the ownership structure, unlike the arrangement at Rolex where a foundation owns the company outright.
26Does Audemars Piguet still make dress watches?
Yes, though they sit well behind the Royal Oak in visibility. The Code 11.59 collection and the [Re]master pieces are round-cased watches in the classical tradition, and Audemars Piguet continues to build minute repeaters and perpetual calendars. Where Audemars Piguet watches are made
Everything is made in Switzerland, most of it in the Vallée de Joux where the company started. Audemars Piguet builds its own movements, and has expanded its manufacturing capacity substantially in recent years, opening a large new facility named L'Arc in January 2026 and a second site dedicated to precious-metal cases and bracelets shortly afterwards. The 14 answers below cover how a Royal Oak actually gets built.
27Where are Audemars Piguet watches made?
In Switzerland, principally in the Vallée de Joux around Le Brassus, with additional facilities elsewhere in the country for cases, bracelets and complicated movement work. Nothing is manufactured outside Switzerland. Final assembly and quality control remain in the valley.
28Where is Audemars Piguet headquartered?
Le Brassus, in the commune of Le Chenit, canton of Vaud. The address has been in the same valley since 1875. The company opened a substantial new manufacture named L'Arc in January 2026, adding significant capacity to the site.
29Are Audemars Piguet watches made in Switzerland?
Entirely. Audemars Piguet operates no manufacturing outside Switzerland and every watch carries the Swiss Made designation. Anything presented as an Audemars Piguet made elsewhere is not one.
30Where are Audemars Piguet movements made?

33Does Audemars Piguet make its own cases?
Yes. Case and bracelet production is held in-house, which matters more here than at most brands because so much of a Royal Oak's value sits in the geometry of the case and the finishing on its edges.
34Does Audemars Piguet make its own bracelets?
Yes, and the Royal Oak bracelet is among the most labour-intensive parts of the watch. Each link tapers, each is finished by hand with alternating brushed surfaces and polished bevels, and the whole assembly has to flow into the case without a visible break.
35Are Audemars Piguet watches handmade?
Substantially. Machining is automated, but the finishing that defines an Audemars Piguet is hand work: the polished bevels on the case and bracelet, the anglage on movement bridges, the assembly and regulation. This is where the price sits, and it is why polishing damage is so costly to correct.
36How long does it take to make a Royal Oak?
Audemars Piguet has described the finishing of a Royal Oak case and bracelet as taking many hours of hand work on its own, before the movement is considered. Complicated references take considerably longer again. The company has not published a single figure, and any precise number quoted online should be treated as an estimate.
37How many people work at Audemars Piguet?
Around 3,000 to 3,500 worldwide, across manufacturing in Switzerland and the retail and AP House network internationally. The headcount has grown alongside revenue while annual watch production has stayed broadly flat, which reflects where the company has invested.
38What is the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet?
The company's museum in Le Brassus, opened in 2020, built as a spiral of glass set into the ground next to the original workshop. It holds historic pieces from the archive alongside working watchmakers producing complicated movements on site.
39Can you visit the Audemars Piguet manufacture?
The Musée Atelier in Le Brassus is open to visitors, generally by advance booking through audemarspiguet.com. The production facilities themselves are not open to the public. Booking arrangements change, so check the company's own site rather than relying on secondhand information.
40Is Audemars Piguet Swiss Made?
Yes, and comfortably beyond the legal minimum. Swiss law requires at least 60 per cent of manufacturing cost, the movement, the casing and final inspection to be Swiss. Audemars Piguet manufactures essentially the entire watch in Switzerland, movement included.

The Royal Oak
The Royal Oak is the watch that saved Audemars Piguet and then reshaped the industry around it. Gérald Genta designed it in a single night in 1971, it launched at Basel in 1972 at a price higher than a gold dress watch, and it sold slowly for years before collectors understood it. 41What is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?
A steel luxury sports watch launched in 1972, defined by an octagonal bezel held by eight exposed hexagonal screws, a bracelet integrated into the case rather than attached to it, and a textured tapisserie dial. It created the category every integrated-bracelet sports watch since has worked within.
42Who designed the Royal Oak?
Gérald Genta, commissioned by Audemars Piguet's managing director Georges Golay in 1971. The brief was a steel sports watch for the Italian market, and Golay wanted the design the next morning. Genta produced it overnight.
43Who was Gérald Genta?
The most influential watch designer of the twentieth century. Beyond the Royal Oak he designed the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the IWC Ingenieur SL and a long list of others. His signature was the integrated bracelet and the case that treats steel with the seriousness usually reserved for gold.
44When was the Royal Oak released?
At the Basel fair in April 1972, as reference 5402. Audemars Piguet priced it at 3,300 Swiss francs, more than a gold Patek Philippe dress watch and roughly ten times a steel Rolex Submariner. The reaction was closer to bewilderment than enthusiasm.
45Why is it called the Royal Oak?
After the Royal Navy warships named HMS Royal Oak, and behind them the oak tree King Charles II is said to have hidden in after the Battle of Worcester. The naval connection is the design link: the bezel and its exposed screws echo a ship's porthole and a diving helmet.
46Why does the Royal Oak have an octagonal bezel?
Genta took the form from a diver's helmet, where the faceplate is bolted down through visible fasteners. Turning an engineering detail into the front of a luxury watch was the provocation. In 1972 exposed screws on an expensive watch read as a mistake rather than a decision.
47How many screws are on the Royal Oak bezel?
Eight, one at each corner of the octagon, and all eight are aligned identically across every watch that leaves the manufacture. That alignment is a manufacturing signature: getting eight fasteners to seat at the same angle while clamping the bezel evenly is harder than it looks.
48Are the Royal Oak bezel screws real?
They are functional, not decorative. The screws pass through the bezel and the case and are secured from the reverse, clamping the bezel and the gasket against the caseband. They are also part of what makes the watch water resistant.
49What is the Royal Oak Jumbo?
Collector shorthand for the 39mm extra-thin Royal Oak, running from the original 5402 through the 15202 to the current 16202. The nickname is now a joke on itself: 39mm was enormous for a watch in 1972 and reads as restrained today. The Jumbo is the purest form of the design.
50What is reference 5402?
The original Royal Oak, launched in 1972 in steel at 39mm with calibre 2121. Audemars Piguet built the first 1,000 pieces as the A-series, which took more than a year to sell. B and C series followed. A-series examples are among the most sought-after watches the company has made.
51What is reference 15202?
The Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin, 39mm, carrying calibre 2121 and the closest thing to a direct descendant of the 5402. It ran until 2022, when Audemars Piguet retired it alongside the movement. It is the reference most collectors mean when they say Jumbo.
52Why was the 15202 discontinued?
Audemars Piguet retired it at the model's 50th anniversary in 2022, along with the calibre 2121 it had carried for decades. The movement dated to the 1960s and the company replaced it with the in-house 7121. Ending both together marked the line between the old Jumbo and the new one.
53What replaced the 15202?
Reference 16202, launched in 2022 at the same 39mm with the new calibre 7121. The proportions carry over almost exactly. The visible changes are the movement, seen through the caseback, and dial detailing including the Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 finish on the anniversary pieces.
54What is reference 16202?
The current Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin, 39mm and roughly 8mm thick, with calibre 7121 visible through a sapphire caseback. It is the thinnest watch in the regular Royal Oak line and the one collectors treat as the reference version of the design.
55What is reference 15400?
The 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding produced from 2012 to 2019, with calibre 3120. It is the reference that established 41mm as the standard size and remains one of the most widely owned Royal Oaks on the secondary market.
56What is reference 15500?
The 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding that replaced the 15400 in 2019, carrying the newer calibre 4302 with a longer power reserve. The dial was revised, with the minute track moved out to the flange and longer applied markers.
57What is reference 15510?
The current 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding, introduced for the 50th anniversary in 2022 as the successor to the 15500. It keeps the calibre 4302 and the case, with anniversary detailing including a revised oscillating weight.
58What is the difference between the 15400 and the 15500?
Three things. The movement changed from calibre 3120 to 4302, lengthening the power reserve. The dial was redrawn, with the minute track pushed onto the flange, longer hour markers and a slightly larger date aperture. The case and bracelet are essentially unchanged at 41mm.
59What is the difference between the 15500 and the 15510?
Very little mechanically. The 15510 is the 50th anniversary update, keeping the 41mm case and calibre 4302, with anniversary detailing and a revised rotor. Buyers usually decide between them on price and availability rather than on specification.
60What is the difference between the 15202 and the 15500?
They are different watches that share a bezel. The 15202 is 39mm, extra-thin, with the historic calibre 2121 and a dial without the applied Royal Oak text. The 15500 is 41mm, noticeably thicker, with a modern movement. The Jumbo is the collector's piece; the 41mm is the one built to be worn daily.
61What size is the Royal Oak?
The current line runs 34mm, 37mm, 39mm and 41mm. The 39mm Jumbo and the 41mm Selfwinding are the two most requested. Because the bracelet integrates into the case, a Royal Oak wears smaller than its diameter suggests, so the numbers are not directly comparable with a conventional watch.
62What is the thinnest Royal Oak?
In the regular collection, the 39mm Jumbo Extra-Thin at roughly 8mm. Audemars Piguet has gone considerably thinner in its research pieces, including an extra-thin flying tourbillon that set a record for the complication. Those are limited exercises rather than catalogue watches.
63What is the Royal Oak Selfwinding?
The core automatic Royal Oak with a date, sitting between the Jumbo and the complicated pieces. It is the volume model and the reference most people mean by "a Royal Oak", currently the 41mm 15510 and the 37mm 15550.
64What is the Royal Oak Chronograph?
The Royal Oak with a stopwatch function and three sub-dials, made since 1997. The current 41mm reference 26240 carries calibre 4401, an integrated in-house chronograph with a flyback function, replacing the modular arrangement earlier references used.
65What is the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar?
A Royal Oak that tracks day, date, month, moon phase and leap year, correcting for month lengths automatically and needing no adjustment until 2100. Audemars Piguet has built perpetual calendars since long before the Royal Oak existed, and the complication sits naturally in this case.
66What is the Royal Oak Tourbillon?
A Royal Oak with a tourbillon, a rotating cage carrying the escapement to average out positional errors from gravity. Audemars Piguet builds several versions, including extra-thin and flying tourbillons, generally in precious metal and in small numbers.
67What is the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel?
A Royal Oak with two balance wheels and two hairsprings mounted on a single axis, patented by Audemars Piguet in 2016. The pair average each other's rate errors, improving stability. On the openworked versions the mechanism is visible through the dial, which is much of the appeal.
68What is the Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon?
A tourbillon supported only from beneath, with no upper bridge, so the cage appears to float in the dial. It is harder to engineer than a conventional tourbillon and is used across the Royal Oak, Offshore and Concept lines.
69What is the Royal Oak Skeleton?
An openworked Royal Oak with the dial cut away and the movement bridges hand-finished on every visible surface. Audemars Piguet uses the term openworked rather than skeleton for its current pieces. The work is decorative finishing rather than mechanical, and it is where a large part of the price sits.
70Which Royal Oak dial colours are there?
Blue is the signature and the most requested. Black, grey, silver-toned, white and green all appear across the line, with smoked and gradient finishes on selected references. Dial colour changes market value on the same reference, sometimes considerably.
71What is the blue Royal Oak?
The blue tapisserie dial is the colour most associated with the model, and it commands the strongest demand across most references. The 50th anniversary watches introduced a particular shade named Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50, which shifts noticeably with the light.
72What is the smoked dial Royal Oak?
A dial finished so the colour darkens toward the edge, produced on selected references. The effect deepens the tapisserie texture and makes the dial read differently at different angles. Smoked variants tend to be produced in smaller numbers than the flat-finish equivalents.
73Which Royal Oak is most popular?
The 41mm Selfwinding in steel with a blue dial, currently the 15510 and previously the 15500 and 15400. It is the reference that combines the design, a wearable size and the lowest entry point into the collection. The 39mm Jumbo is the collector's answer to the same question.
74Which Royal Oak should I buy first?
A steel Selfwinding, in 41mm or 37mm depending on the wrist, is the usual starting point. It is the most liquid reference, the easiest to live with and the simplest to move on if tastes change. The Royal Oak Offshore and Concept
If the Royal Oak was a provocation in 1972, the Offshore was a second one in 1993: bigger, thicker, louder, and aimed at buyers the original was not written for. Gérald Genta reportedly disliked it. It went on to define an era. The Concept line, launched a decade later, is where Audemars Piguet puts its experimental engineering. The 18 answers below cover both.

75What is the Royal Oak Offshore?
A larger, thicker and more aggressive interpretation of the Royal Oak, launched in 1993. It keeps the octagonal bezel and the eight screws but adds bulk, a protective rubber-gasketed construction and, on most references, crown guards and a chronograph. It reads as a different watch at arm's length.
76When was the Offshore released?
1993, as reference 25721, at 42mm when 36mm was still a normal men's size. Audemars Piguet launched it to mark the Royal Oak's 20th anniversary. The trade reaction was hostile enough that the watch nearly did not survive its first years.
77Who designed the Royal Oak Offshore?
Emmanuel Gueit, who was 22 at the time. He was asked to make the Royal Oak speak to a younger buyer, and he answered by enlarging almost every element of it. Gérald Genta is reported to have objected strongly to what had been done to his design.
78Why is the Offshore called The Beast?
The nickname came from the press at launch, aimed at its size and weight against everything else on the market in 1993. It was not a compliment at the time. It became one as tastes moved toward larger watches through the following decade.
79What size is the Royal Oak Offshore?

References and serial numbers
An Audemars Piguet reference is longer than most, because it encodes the case, the bracelet and the dial in one string. A watch also carries its own case and movement numbers, unique to that piece. Audemars Piguet has never published the full key to either, and the company's own Extract of the Archives is the only authoritative way to establish what a watch is and when it left Le Brassus. The 16 answers below explain how both systems work.
93How do Audemars Piguet reference numbers work?
A full reference runs to something like 15510ST.OO.1320ST.01. The opening five digits identify the model and generation. The letters that follow describe the case material. A second group describes the bracelet or strap, and the final digits identify the dial variant. Audemars Piguet has never published the complete key, so the reading in circulation is dealer convention.
94What does the Audemars Piguet reference number tell you?
The model, the generation, the case metal, the bracelet fitted and the dial variant. That is more information than most brands encode, which is why AP references are so long. What it does not give you is the year of manufacture.

Audemars Piguet has built its own movements since 1875, and the company's reputation was made on complications long before the Royal Oak existed. Two calibres matter most to buyers: the 2121, which carried the thin Royal Oak for half a century, and the 4302, which powers the 41mm watches most people buy today. Pull the crown to its first position and turn to advance the date, then push it back. Avoid changing the date late in the evening or in the small hours, when the date mechanism is engaged and can be damaged. Move the hands to a safe hour first if in doubt.

Audemars Piguet does not compete on exotic alloys the way some brands do. Its steel is conventional steel; the difference sits in what happens to it afterwards. The alternating brushed surfaces and hand-polished bevels on a Royal Oak case and bracelet are where the hours go, and the tapisserie dial is made by a process almost nobody else uses.
