Section 01

Cartier, the maison

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 as a jeweller, and it was a jeweller for more than fifty years before it made a wristwatch. That order matters: Cartier approaches a watch as an object to be shaped rather than a mechanism to be housed, which is why its watches are square, elliptical, tonneau and cushion while almost everyone else's are round. The 30 answers below cover the founding, the family, the ownership and the name.

01Who founded Cartier?

Louis-François Cartier, who took over his master's jewellery workshop in Paris in 1847. He was 28. The business he started remained in family hands for over a century, run by his son and then by his three grandsons, who turned a Paris jeweller into an international maison.

02When was Cartier founded?

1847, which makes it older than most of the Swiss houses it is now grouped with. It spent its first half-century as a jeweller. The first Cartier wristwatch did not appear until 1904.

03Where was Cartier founded?

Paris, in a workshop on the rue Montorgueil. The maison moved several times before settling at 13 rue de la Paix in 1899, which remains its address and one of the most significant retail sites in luxury.

04Who was Louis-François Cartier?

The founder, born in 1819, who took over Adolphe Picard's Paris workshop in 1847. He built the business on commissions from the French court and aristocracy in the years after the Second Empire, laying the groundwork his grandsons would take worldwide.

05Who was Louis Cartier?

The founder's grandson, born in 1875, who ran the Paris house and designed or commissioned almost everything Cartier is now known for. The Santos in 1904 and the Tank in 1917 are both his. He is one of the most important figures in twentieth-century design, watchmaking or otherwise.

06Who were the three Cartier brothers?

Louis, Pierre and Jacques, grandsons of the founder. Their father Alfred divided the world between them: Louis took Paris, Pierre took New York and Jacques took London. Each ran his own house with real autonomy, which is why Cartier developed distinct design traditions in three cities at once.

07How did Cartier become global?

By splitting rather than centralising. Jacques opened London on New Bond Street and cultivated the British court and the Indian princely states. Pierre opened New York and acquired the Fifth Avenue mansion that is still the flagship. Louis held Paris. Three cities, three houses, one name.

08Who owns Cartier?

Richemont, the Swiss luxury group, which also owns Vacheron Constantin, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget and Van Cleef & Arpels. Cartier is Richemont's largest maison by a considerable margin and effectively the foundation the group is built on.

09When did Richemont buy Cartier?

Richemont was created in 1988 by Johann Rupert and took full control of Cartier in the early 1990s. The three Cartier houses had already been sold out of family ownership and reunited under a single company in 1979, so Richemont acquired a business that was whole again rather than three separate ones.

10Is Cartier still family owned?

No. The family sold the three houses separately between the 1960s and the 1970s: Paris first, then London, then New York. A group of investors reunited them in 1979 under the name Cartier Monde, and Richemont took over from there. No Cartier has run Cartier since the 1970s.

11Is Cartier publicly traded?

Not on its own. Cartier is wholly owned by Richemont, which is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Richemont reports Cartier within its Jewellery Maisons division alongside Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccellati rather than breaking it out separately.

12Is Cartier French or Swiss?

Both, in different places. Cartier is a French maison, founded in Paris in 1847 and still headquartered there, with its jewellery made in Paris workshops. Its watches are designed and manufactured in Switzerland. The brand is French; the watchmaking is Swiss.

13Why are Cartier watches made in Switzerland if the brand is French?

Because serious mechanical watchmaking has been concentrated in Switzerland for two centuries, and because the Swiss Made designation carries weight no French equivalent does. Cartier established its Swiss watch operation in the 1970s and built its own manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Jewellery stayed in Paris.

14How do you pronounce Cartier?

In French, roughly kar-TYAY, with the stress on the second syllable and the final R silent. The common English version, car-tee-AY, is close enough that nobody will correct you. What to avoid is sounding the final R.

15What does the Cartier logo mean?

The wordmark is a script rendering of the family name, drawn to look handwritten. The interlocking double C, used as a decorative motif on clasps and jewellery, is a separate device rather than the logo itself. Neither carries a hidden meaning.

16Why is Cartier called the jeweller of kings?

From the line "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers", which attached itself to the maison in the early twentieth century when it held royal warrants from courts across Europe. Cartier was not being modest about it, but the customer list supported the claim.

17Who called Cartier the king of jewellers?

The phrase is attributed to King Edward VII, who granted Cartier a royal warrant in 1904 and had commissioned pieces for his coronation. Whether he said it exactly that way is not documented, but the warrant is, and it opened the door to the other European courts.

18Is Cartier a watch brand or a jewellery brand?

It began as a jeweller and remains one, and it is also among the largest watch brands in the world. That dual identity is not a compromise: it is why Cartier watches are shaped rather than round, and why the design instinct came from the jewellery side rather than from the movement.

19How many watches does Cartier make a year?

Cartier does not publish production figures. Industry estimates put output in the hundreds of thousands, far above Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet and well below Rolex. Those numbers are analyst estimates rather than company statements.

20How much revenue does Cartier make?

Richemont reports Cartier within its Jewellery Maisons division rather than separately, so no exact figure is public. Analyst estimates consistently place Cartier as the second-largest Swiss watch brand by revenue after Rolex, on top of a jewellery business larger again.

21Is Cartier the second biggest watch brand?

By revenue, industry estimates generally place it second behind Rolex. That surprises people who think of Cartier as a jeweller, and it is a useful corrective: this is one of the largest watch businesses in Switzerland, not a jewellery house with a watch sideline.

22Is Cartier a luxury brand?

Yes, and it is one of the few that operates at the very top of two categories at once. In jewellery it sits alongside Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston. In watches it spans an accessible quartz Tank through to Fine Watchmaking pieces carrying the Geneva Seal.

23Is Cartier considered high horology?

Part of the range is. Cartier established a Fine Watchmaking division in 2008 producing tourbillons, mystery movements and skeletonised calibres, some carrying the Geneva Seal. The bulk of the catalogue is not haute horlogerie and does not pretend to be. Collectors who dismiss Cartier entirely are usually unaware the division exists.

24What is Cartier Privé?

A collector-focused programme launched in 2015 that revives historic Cartier shapes in small limited runs: the Crash, the Cloche, the Tortue, the Tank Cintrée, the Tank Normale. Each release is a single shape treated seriously, and they sell out on announcement.

25What is the Cartier Foundation?

The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, established in Paris in 1984 to commission and exhibit contemporary art. It is independent of the commercial business and is one of the longest-running corporate art foundations anywhere.

26Did Cartier invent the wristwatch?

No. Watches worn on the wrist existed in the nineteenth century, generally made for women and treated as jewellery. What Cartier did in 1904 was make one for a man, for a practical purpose, and make it desirable. That is a different achievement and arguably a larger one.

27What was the first Cartier wristwatch?

The Santos, made in 1904 for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who told Louis Cartier that pulling a pocket watch out while flying was impractical. It went on public sale in 1911 and is still in the catalogue, which makes it the oldest continuously produced wristwatch design.

28Did Cartier survive the quartz crisis?

Not only survived it, but used it. While Swiss mechanical makers were collapsing, Cartier launched Les Must in 1973: accessible quartz watches and accessories that reached an entirely new customer. Quartz was an opportunity for a design-led house in a way it was not for a movement-led one.

29What was Les Must de Cartier?

A line launched in 1973 of watches, lighters, pens and leather goods at prices far below the main collection, many in vermeil, which is gold over sterling silver. The name came from the idea that a Cartier was a must. It sold enormously and rebuilt the business.

30Why did Cartier start Les Must?

Because the maison had been broken up, sold off and reassembled, and it needed volume. Les Must made Cartier reachable for people who would never buy a diamond necklace, and it turned the Tank from a rarefied object into something recognisable worldwide. Cartier revived the name for the Tank Must in 2021.

Section 02

Where Cartier watches are made

Cartier watches are made in Switzerland and Cartier jewellery is made in Paris, and the two halves of the maison have operated that way for fifty years. The Swiss manufacture sits in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and Cartier has been building its own movements there since the late 2000s after decades of using outside suppliers. The 14 answers below cover how it works.

31Where are Cartier watches made?

In Switzerland, principally at Manufacture Cartier in La Chaux-de-Fonds, with additional Swiss sites for specific operations. The jewellery is a separate business made in Paris. A Cartier watch is a Swiss watch from a French maison.

32Where is Manufacture Cartier?

La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the Swiss Jura, the town that has been the centre of Swiss watch production since the eighteenth century. Cartier opened the manufacture there in 2001 and has extended it substantially since. It handles design, movement production, cases and assembly.

33Are Cartier watches Swiss Made?

Yes. Every Cartier watch carries the Swiss Made designation, which requires at least 60 per cent of manufacturing cost, the movement, the casing and final inspection to be Swiss. The French identity is the brand rather than the production.

34Are Cartier watches made in France?

No. Cartier jewellery is made in Paris workshops, including the high jewellery pieces produced above the rue de la Paix maison. The watches are Swiss. People often assume the reverse because the brand reads so strongly as French.

35Does Cartier make its own movements?

Yes, for a large part of the range. Cartier developed in-house manufacture calibres from the late 2000s, and the MC designation on a movement marks one. Some entry references still use movements sourced from other Swiss suppliers, which Cartier does not hide.

36When did Cartier start making its own movements?

The serious push came in the late 2000s, with the calibre 1904 MC arriving in 2010 as the first in-house automatic produced at volume. Before that Cartier designed watches and bought movements, which was normal practice for a design-led house.

37Did Cartier use ETA movements?

Yes, extensively, alongside movements from Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget over the years. That history is sometimes used against Cartier by collectors, which misreads what the maison was doing: it was selling design, and buying a reliable movement to put behind it was the sensible choice.

38Does Cartier still use outsourced movements?

On some references, yes, generally at the accessible end of the range. The in-house MC calibres cover the rest, and the Fine Watchmaking pieces are entirely Cartier's own. Check the calibre rather than assuming either way.

39Where are Cartier cases made?

In Switzerland, at the manufacture. Case production matters unusually here because Cartier's cases are shaped rather than round, and a Tank or a Crash is considerably harder to machine and finish than a circular case.

40Are Cartier watches handmade?

Partly. Machining is automated and assembly on the volume references is semi-automated. The Fine Watchmaking pieces, the gem-set watches and everything in Rare Handcrafts are hand work, as is all the Paris jewellery. It depends entirely which part of the maison you are looking at.

41How many people work at Cartier?

Cartier does not publish a headcount, and Richemont reports at group level. The Swiss manufacture is among the larger watchmaking operations in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the Paris jewellery workshops and the global retail network add substantially to it.

42Can you visit the Cartier manufacture?

No. La Chaux-de-Fonds is not open to the public. Cartier's exhibitions of the Cartier Collection travel internationally to museums, and the rue de la Paix maison in Paris is the closest thing to a public expression of the brand's history.

43Where is the Cartier flagship?

13 rue de la Paix in Paris, the maison's address since 1899. The Fifth Avenue mansion in New York, acquired by Pierre Cartier in 1917, is the other historic flagship and one of the best-known stories in the trade.

44What is 13 Rue de la Paix?

Cartier's Paris address and the centre of the maison's identity. Louis Cartier moved the business there in 1899, and it is where the Santos and the Tank were conceived. The building reopened after a major renovation in 2019 and still houses the high jewellery workshops upstairs.

Section 03

The Tank

Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917 and it has never been out of production since. More than a century on it remains the most copied watch shape in the world and arguably the most influential single design in watchmaking. The difficulty for a buyer is that Tank is not one watch: there are a dozen distinct variants and the names are not intuitive. The table decodes them and the 32 answers below cover the model.

Table 3 · Tank variants

Variant Introduced Defining feature Status
Tank Normale 1917 The original form, flat brancards, square proportions Privé revivals
Tank Cintrée 1921 Elongated and curved to follow the wrist Privé revivals
Tank Louis Cartier 1922 Rounded brancard corners, precious metal only Current
Tank Chinoise 1922 Horizontal bars across the top and bottom Privé revivals
Tank Basculante 1932 Case flips within its frame to protect the dial Discontinued
Tank Asymétrique 1936 Parallelogram case with the dial rotated Privé revivals
Tank Américaine 1989 Long, curved, water resistant, often automatic Current
Tank Française 1996 Integrated bracelet, squarer proportions Current
Tank Solo 2004 Steel entry Tank on a strap Discontinued
Tank Anglaise 2012 Crown built into the brancard Largely withdrawn
Tank Must 2021 Steel entry Tank, quartz and SolarBeat Current

45What is the Cartier Tank?

A rectangular watch designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, defined by two vertical bars called brancards running down each side of the case and continuing into the strap. It has been in continuous production for over a century and is the template most rectangular watches since have worked from.

46Who designed the Tank?

Louis Cartier, grandson of the founder, who also commissioned the Santos. He drew it in 1917 while the First World War was still running. It is the design that established Cartier as a watchmaker rather than a jeweller who also sold watches.

47When was the Tank released?

Designed in 1917 and sold commercially from 1919, in a first run of a handful of pieces. Louis Cartier is said to have presented one of the earliest examples to General Pershing, commander of the American forces in France.

48Why is it called the Tank?

Because Louis Cartier took the form from a military tank seen from above: the two vertical brancards are the tracks and the dial sits between them like the crew compartment. Renault's FT tank, which had just appeared on the Western Front, is the one usually credited.

49Is the Tank based on a military tank?

Yes, in plan view rather than in appearance. Nothing about the finished watch reads as military, which is part of why the story surprises people. Cartier took an industrial silhouette and made it the most elegant watch shape of the century.

50What is the Tank Louis Cartier?

The purist's Tank, introduced in 1922, with softly rounded brancard corners and made only in precious metal. It is the version collectors mean when they say a Tank without qualifying it, and it is the closest thing to a definitive Cartier dress watch.

51What is the Tank Must?

The steel entry Tank, launched in 2021, reviving the Les Must name Cartier used in the 1970s. It comes in quartz and in the solar-powered SolarBeat version, with a larger automatic added since. It is how most people now enter the brand.

52What is the Tank Française?

The Tank with an integrated bracelet, launched in 1996 and relaunched in 2023. The case is squarer and shorter than a Tank Louis, and the bracelet flows straight out of the brancards. It is the most contemporary-looking Tank and the one that works best as a daily watch.

53What is the Tank Américaine?

Introduced in 1989, a long Tank with a case curved to follow the wrist, water resistant and frequently automatic where most Tanks are not. The name nods to the American market Pierre Cartier built. It wears longer and more assertively than a Tank Louis.

54What is the Tank Anglaise?

A 2012 design in which the crown is set into the right-hand brancard rather than protruding from it, giving a completely uninterrupted case profile. It has largely been withdrawn from the catalogue and now trades on the secondary market.

55What is the Tank Solo?

The steel entry Tank produced from 2004, on a strap, in quartz and automatic. It was discontinued around 2021 and replaced by the Tank Must. Secondary-market Solos remain one of the least expensive routes into a genuine Cartier.

56What is the Tank Asymétrique?

A Tank from 1936 whose case is a parallelogram, with the dial rotated so the numerals read on a diagonal. It is one of the strangest things Cartier has made and it has been revived through the Privé programme in very small numbers.

57What is the Tank Cintrée?

A Tank from 1921, long and narrow with the case curved along its length to sit against the wrist. It is among the most sought-after Cartier shapes and was revived as the first Privé release of the Tank series. Originals trade at serious money.

58What is the Tank Normale?

The original 1917 form, with flat brancards and squarer proportions than the Tank Louis that followed it. The name only exists retrospectively, to distinguish it from the variants that came afterwards. Cartier revived it through Privé.

59What is the Tank Chinoise?

A 1922 Tank with additional horizontal bars across the top and bottom of the case, framing the dial on all four sides in a way that echoes a pagoda gate. It is a Privé revival rather than a catalogue model and it divides opinion completely.

60What is the Tank Basculante?

A Tank from 1932 whose case swivels within its frame so the dial can be turned face-down for protection, the same problem a reversible watch solves by a different route. It was reissued in the 1990s and is now discontinued.

61What is the difference between the Tank Louis and the Tank Must?

Metal and movement. The Tank Louis Cartier is precious metal with a hand-wound mechanical movement. The Tank Must is steel with quartz or SolarBeat, at a fraction of the price. The case proportions are close, so from a distance they read similarly. In the hand they are different objects.

62What is the difference between the Tank Française and the Tank Américaine?

Shape and bracelet. The Française is shorter, squarer and comes on an integrated bracelet. The Américaine is longer, curved along its length and usually on a strap. The Française reads modern, the Américaine reads classic. Neither is a version of the other.

63Which Tank is the original?

The Tank Normale from 1917. The Tank Louis Cartier of 1922 is the one most people picture, and it is a refinement rather than the first. Every other variant descends from those two.

64Which Tank should I buy first?

A Tank Must if the budget is under a Tank Louis, and a Tank Louis Cartier if it is not. Those two cover most of what people want from the model. The Française is the answer for anyone who wants a bracelet and something more contemporary. Hollywood Gems will talk through the shortlist: (323) 991-9697.

65Which Tank is most popular?

The Tank Must by volume, because of the entry price, and the Tank Louis Cartier by desire. The Française has climbed sharply since the 2023 relaunch. Collector interest concentrates on the Tank Louis and the vintage shapes.

66Is the Tank Must quartz?

Most Tank Must references are quartz or SolarBeat, and Cartier has added a larger automatic version. Quartz on a Cartier is not the compromise it would be elsewhere: the watch is bought for the case, and a thinner quartz movement lets the case stay thin.

67Is there an automatic Tank?

Yes. The Tank Américaine and the larger Tank Française references are automatic, and the Tank Must is offered with an automatic movement in the larger size. The Tank Louis Cartier is hand-wound rather than automatic, which is a deliberate choice about thinness.

68What is SolarBeat?

Cartier's photovoltaic movement, introduced with the Tank Must in 2021. Light passes through perforations hidden behind the Roman numerals to reach solar cells beneath the dial. Cartier states the cell should run for around sixteen years before replacement, and the strap is made from apple waste.

69What size is the Tank Louis Cartier?

Roughly 33.7 by 25.5mm in the large size and around 29.5 by 22mm in the small, both very thin. Rectangular watches are measured differently from round ones, so the numbers read smaller than they wear. A large Tank Louis sits comfortably on most adult wrists.

70What size is the Tank Must?

It follows the Tank Louis proportions closely in small and large, with an extra-large added at around 41 by 31mm. The large is the most commonly bought. Because the case is thin and the lugs are effectively the brancards, it wears smaller than the figures suggest.

71Is the Tank a men's or women's watch?

Both, and Cartier has never seriously separated them. The Tank is sized rather than gendered, and the same references are worn across the board. It is one of the few watches at this level where that has always been true rather than becoming true recently.

72Does the Tank hold its value?

Precious-metal Tank Louis references have performed strongly, and vintage Tanks have risen sharply over the last decade. Steel quartz references behave differently: they are bought new at accessible prices and resell at a discount, as most entry watches do. The variant matters more than the model name.

73Is the Tank a good first luxury watch?

It is one of the best. The design is over a century old and has never dated, it is instantly recognised without shouting, it fits under a cuff, and the Tank Must brings the entry price well below most mechanical alternatives. What it is not is a sports watch.

74Which Tank did Jackie Kennedy wear?

A gold Tank given to her in 1963 by her brother-in-law Stanislaw Radziwill, engraved on the caseback. She wore it for decades. It sold at auction in 2017 for a figure well into six digits and is among the most famous watches ever associated with a person rather than an event.

75Which Tank did Andy Warhol wear?

He owned several Cartier Tanks and is the source of the best line ever written about the model: he said he did not wear a Tank to tell the time, he wore it because it was the watch to wear. He is widely reported not to have wound it.

76Is the Tank discontinued?

No. The Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Must, Tank Française and Tank Américaine are all current. What has been discontinued is a long list of individual variants, including the Solo, the Basculante and most Anglaise references, which is why so much Tank demand sits on the secondary market.

Section 04

The Santos

The Santos is older than the Tank and older than almost everything else still in production. Louis Cartier made it in 1904 for a friend who could not read a pocket watch while flying, and in doing so produced the first purpose-built men's wristwatch. Its exposed bezel screws predate the Royal Oak's by 68 years. The 24 answers below cover the model.

Table 4 · Santos lineup

Model Introduced Character Status
Santos (original) 1904 Made for Alberto Santos-Dumont, on public sale from 1911 Historic
Santos Galbée 1987 Curved case, softer profile Discontinued
Santos 100 2004 Centenary model, noticeably larger Discontinued
Santos de Cartier 2018 relaunch Automatic, QuickSwitch and SmartLink, 100m Current
Santos-Dumont Current line Thinner, closer to the original, quartz or hand-wound Current
Santos-Dumont Skeleton Current line Openworked movement forming the numerals Current

77What is the Cartier Santos?

A square-cased watch with rounded corners and eight exposed screws on the bezel, created in 1904. It is the oldest wristwatch design still in production and the first made specifically for a man to wear while doing something. Current stock sits in the Cartier collection.

78Who was Santos-Dumont?

Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviation pioneer living in Paris and a celebrity of his era. He flew airships over the city and later made the first public powered flight in Europe. He was also a friend of Louis Cartier, which is how the watch came to exist.

79When was the Santos created?

1904, as a one-off for Santos-Dumont. Cartier put it on public sale in 1911, which makes that the year the design became a product. Either date puts it decades ahead of most of what people consider classic watches.

80Was the Santos the first pilot's watch?

It is generally credited as such. Santos-Dumont needed to time a flight without taking his hands off the controls, and a pocket watch could not do that. Every pilot's watch since answers the same problem the same way.

81Was the Santos the first men's wristwatch?

The first made deliberately for a man to use, yes. Wrist-worn watches existed before 1904, generally made for women and regarded as jewellery, and military officers had improvised by strapping pocket watches to their wrists. The Santos was designed from the start to be worn there.

82What is the Santos de Cartier?

The current mainline Santos, relaunched in 2018: automatic, water resistant to 100 metres, with the QuickSwitch strap system and the SmartLink bracelet. It is the most practical watch Cartier makes and the closest the maison comes to a sports watch.

83What is the Santos-Dumont?

The thinner, dressier line that stays closer to the 1904 original: a flatter case, a strap rather than a bracelet, and either quartz or a hand-wound movement. It is a different watch from the Santos de Cartier despite the shared name and shape.

84What is the difference between the Santos and the Santos-Dumont?

The Santos de Cartier is thicker, automatic, water resistant and usually on a bracelet. The Santos-Dumont is thin, often quartz or hand-wound, on a strap, and reads as a dress watch. Same silhouette, opposite purposes.

85What is the Santos Galbée?

A version introduced in 1987 with a gently curved case and softer edges than the squared-off Santos that preceded it. It ran for two decades and is now discontinued. Galbée examples are among the more affordable vintage Cartiers and have been rising.

86What is the Santos 100?

The centenary model launched in 2004 to mark a hundred years of the design, in a substantially larger case than anything before it. It suited the taste of the period and reads as very much of its moment now. Discontinued, and traded actively second-hand.

87What is the Santos-Dumont Skeleton?

A Santos-Dumont in which the movement bridges are shaped to form the Roman numerals, so the mechanism and the dial are the same thing. It is one of the cleverer pieces of design Cartier has done recently and it belongs to the Fine Watchmaking side of the maison.

88What is QuickSwitch?

Cartier's system for changing between a bracelet and a strap without tools, introduced with the 2018 Santos. A concealed catch under the case releases the bracelet and the replacement clicks in. It is among the best implementations of the idea by any manufacturer.

89What is SmartLink?

The bracelet resizing system on the 2018 Santos, which lets links be removed or added by pressing a button on the underside of each link. No tools, no pins, no trip to a watchmaker. It solves a problem the rest of the industry has largely ignored.

90Can you change a Santos strap without tools?

On any Santos de Cartier from 2018 onward, yes, using QuickSwitch. Earlier Santos references need a watchmaker or a spring bar tool. It is one of the strongest practical reasons to choose a current-generation Santos over an older one.

91What size is the Santos de Cartier?

The large is roughly 39.8mm across by 47.5mm long, and the medium roughly 35.1 by 41.9mm. Because the case is square with integrated brancards, both wear smaller than a round watch of the same width.

92What is the difference between Santos Large and Medium?

Around 5mm of width and 6mm of length, which is more noticeable than it sounds on a square case. The large suits wrists above roughly 17cm. The medium is worn widely by men and women both, and it is the more versatile of the two.

93Is the Santos automatic?

The Santos de Cartier is automatic, running the in-house calibre 1847 MC. The Santos-Dumont line is quartz or hand-wound depending on the reference. Check which line you are looking at, because the names are close enough to confuse.

94Is the Santos water resistant?

The Santos de Cartier is rated to 100 metres, which is the highest in the Cartier catalogue and enough for swimming. The thinner Santos-Dumont is rated to 30 metres and should be kept out of water beyond rain and hand-washing.

95Does the Santos hold its value?

Better than most of the Cartier range, because it is mechanical, water resistant and wearable daily, which broadens the buyer pool. Steel Santos de Cartier references trade actively. As with the Tank, precious metal holds a floor while steel carries the demand.

96Is the Santos a good daily watch?

It is the best daily watch Cartier makes. 100 metres of water resistance, an automatic movement, a bracelet that resizes without tools and a strap that swaps in seconds. If the question is which Cartier to wear every day without thinking about it, this is the answer.

97Santos or Tank?

Santos for daily wear, water resistance and a bracelet. Tank for formality, thinness and the purer design statement. The Santos is the more useful watch; the Tank is the more significant one. Plenty of collectors end up owning both.

98What are the Santos screws?

The eight exposed screws on the bezel, present since 1904. They secure the bezel to the case and they are the model's signature. They also mean Cartier was putting visible fasteners on a bezel nearly seven decades before anyone treated it as a radical idea.

99Why does the Santos have exposed screws?

Because the design came from engineering rather than decoration. The early aviation world Santos-Dumont belonged to was made of riveted frames and exposed fixings, and Louis Cartier put that language on the wrist. What began as function is now the fastest way to identify the watch.

100Is the Santos a sports watch?

By Cartier's standards, yes, and it is the only model in the range built for activity. By the standards of a dive watch it is not: no rotating bezel, no screw-down crown. It is a robust everyday watch from a house that mostly does not make them.

Section 05

Ballon Bleu, Panthère and the round models

Cartier is known for shaped cases, which makes its round watches easy to overlook. That is a mistake: the Ballon Bleu is one of the most successful watch launches of the last twenty years, the Pasha was drawn by the man who designed the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, and the Panthère is a jewellery piece that happens to tell the time. The 20 answers below cover them.

Table 5 · The round and cushion collections

Model Introduced Shape Character
Panthère 1983 Square with soft integrated links Jewellery watch, quartz, relaunched 2017
Pasha 1985 Round with a square inner track Screw-down crown cap on a chain, relaunched 2020
Ballon Bleu 2007 Domed circle Crown guard arc and floating sapphire cabochon
Ronde Louis Cartier Current line Round Thin, precious metal, often guilloché or enamel
Ronde Must 2021 Round Steel entry round, replaced the Ronde Solo
Clé 2015 Round Key-shaped winding crown. Discontinued
Drive 2016 Cushion Automotive-influenced. Discontinued

101What is the Ballon Bleu de Cartier?

A round watch launched in 2007 with a domed case and a protective arc sweeping over the crown, so the blue sapphire cabochon appears to sit inside the dial rather than beside it. It became one of Cartier's best-selling watches almost immediately.

102When was the Ballon Bleu released?

2007, which makes it the youngest of Cartier's major collections by a wide margin. The Tank is from 1917 and the Santos from 1904. The Ballon Bleu demonstrated the maison could still create a design that worked commercially rather than only reviving old ones.

103Why is it called the Ballon Bleu?

Blue balloon, after the sapphire cabochon that appears to float within the curve of the case. The whole design is built around making that stone look suspended, which is why the crown guard arc exists and why the case is domed rather than flat.

104What is the Ballon Bleu crown guard?

The raised arc of metal curving over the crown from the case. It protects the crown, it holds the cabochon visually inside the dial's circle, and it is the fastest way to identify the model at a glance. No other Cartier uses it.

105What size is the Ballon Bleu?

The range runs from 28mm through 33, 36 and 40 to 42mm. The 36mm and 40mm are the most commonly bought. Because the case is domed and the lugs are short, it wears close to the wrist and reads slightly smaller than the diameter suggests.

106Is the Ballon Bleu unisex?

Very much so, and the size range is built for it. The smaller references are bought mostly by women and the 40 and 42mm mostly by men, with the 36mm sitting in the middle and worn by everyone. Cartier does not split the collection by gender.

107Does the Ballon Bleu hold its value?

The steel and quartz references behave like most entry watches and resell at a discount to retail. Gold and automatic versions hold better. It has never been a collector's watch in the way the Tank or the Crash are, and the wide production numbers are part of why.

108What is the Cartier Panthère?

A square watch on a bracelet of small soft links that drapes like a chain rather than sitting rigid. Launched in 1983, withdrawn, and relaunched in 2017 into a market that had come back round to it. It is a jewellery piece first.

109When was the Panthère released?

1983, and it became one of the defining accessories of that decade. Cartier discontinued it in the early 2000s and brought it back in 2017, largely unchanged, as vintage-influenced jewellery watches returned to fashion.

110Is the Panthère a watch or a bracelet?

Both, and Cartier does not pretend otherwise. The bracelet is the point: fine articulated links that move like fabric. The watch head is small and quartz. Anyone buying it for the movement has misunderstood what it is.

111What size is the Panthère?

Small at roughly 22 by 30mm and medium at roughly 27 by 37mm, with a large added in some metals. Even the larger sizes read as delicate because the bracelet is so fine. It is one of the smaller watches in the Cartier range.

112What is the Cartier Ronde?

Cartier's family of plain round watches, the quietest thing the maison makes. It carries all the Cartier design codes — Roman numerals, blued sword hands, the cabochon crown — in the most conventional possible case, which is precisely the appeal for some buyers.

113What is the Ronde Must de Cartier?

The steel entry round, introduced in 2021 alongside the Tank Must and replacing the Ronde Solo. Quartz or automatic depending on size. It is the least expensive route into a round Cartier.

114What is the Ronde Louis Cartier?

The precious-metal round watch, thin and dressy, frequently used as the canvas for the maison's decorative work: guilloché dials, grand feu enamel, gem setting. It is where Cartier's jewellery skills show up on a round case.

115What is the Cartier Pasha?

A round watch with a square minute track inside the dial, a screw-down crown protected by a hinged cap, and visible screws on the bezel. Launched in 1985, withdrawn, and relaunched in 2020. It is the most extroverted watch Cartier makes.

116When was the Pasha released?

1985, drawn by Gérald Genta, who had already designed the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. The origin story Cartier tells involves a 1930s commission from the Pasha of Marrakesh for a watch he could swim in. The 1985 watch is the one that exists; the 1930s piece is more legend than record.

117What is the Pasha chain cap?

The screw-down cover over the crown, attached to the case by a short chain so it cannot be lost. It exists because the Pasha was conceived as a watch to swim in, and it has become the model's signature detail.

118What is the Cartier Clé?

A round watch launched in 2015 whose crown is shaped like a key and turns like one, sitting flush against the case. Clé is French for key. It was discontinued after a few years and now trades second-hand, where it is one of the more interesting under-the-radar Cartiers.

119What is the Cartier Drive?

A cushion-cased watch launched in 2016 with automotive styling, aimed at a male buyer the maison felt it was missing. It was discontinued around the start of the 2020s. Like the Clé, it is available cheaply relative to what it is.

120Which round Cartier should I buy?

Ballon Bleu for versatility and the widest size range. Pasha for character and water resistance. Ronde Louis Cartier for the quietest, dressiest option. If it is a first Cartier and a round case is the requirement, the Ballon Bleu in 36 or 40mm is the safe answer. Call (323) 991-9697 to talk it through.

Section 06

Privé and the collector shapes

Cartier Privé is where the maison takes one historic shape a year and makes a few hundred of them. It began in 2015 and it has changed how collectors see the brand more than anything else Cartier has done this century. These are the watches that turned Cartier from a name your grandmother wore into the most discussed house in collecting. The 14 answers below cover the programme.

Table 6 · Privé revivals

Shape Original Defining feature
Crash 1967, Cartier London Melted, asymmetric case unlike anything else in watchmaking
Tortue 1912 Tortoise-shell case, often with a single-button chronograph
Baignoire 1912 Elongated ellipse, the bathtub shape
Pebble 1972, Cartier London Round dial inside a square case rotated 45 degrees
Cloche 1920s Bell-shaped case, reads sideways and stands as a desk clock
Tank Cintrée 1921 Long, narrow, curved along its length
Tank Chinoise 1922 Horizontal bars framing the dial top and bottom
Tank Normale 1917 The original Tank form

121What is the Cartier Privé collection?

A programme that revives one historic Cartier shape at a time in small numbered runs, generally in precious metal, with movements chosen to suit the case rather than the other way round. Each release is treated as a single object rather than a family.

122When did Cartier Privé start?

2015, with a Crash. Cartier has released roughly one shape a year since, working through the Tortue, the Cloche, the Tank Cintrée, the Tank Chinoise and the Tank Normale among others. It is now the most anticipated announcement the maison makes.

123What is the Cartier Crash?

An asymmetric watch created by Cartier London in 1967, with a case that appears melted or twisted. Nothing else in watchmaking looks like it. Original examples are among the rarest and most valuable Cartiers in existence, and the Privé revivals sell out instantly.

124Why is the Crash shaped like that?

The story told most often is that a client's watch was damaged in a car accident and the deformed case inspired the design. Cartier has never confirmed it, and the shape also sits close to an elongated Baignoire distorted. Both explanations circulate; neither is documented.

125How much is a Cartier Crash?

Original 1960s and 1970s London Crash watches have reached seven figures at auction. Modern Privé Crash references trade well into six figures. Both markets are thin and move sharply, so any published figure dates quickly. Call (323) 991-9697 for a current number.

126What is the Cartier Cloche?

A bell-shaped case from the 1920s in which the dial is rotated ninety degrees, so the watch is read sideways on the wrist and can be stood on a desk as a small clock. It is one of the oddest and most charming things Cartier has made.

127What is the Cartier Tortue?

A case shape from 1912 with curved flanks narrowing top and bottom, named for a tortoise shell. Cartier has used it for some of its best single-button chronographs. It is among the oldest shapes still revived and one of the most wearable.

128What is the Cartier Baignoire?

An elliptical case dating to 1912, named for a bathtub because of its rounded rectangular outline. It has run intermittently ever since and sits in the current catalogue as well as appearing through Privé. It is worn widely by women and increasingly by men.

129What is the Baignoire Allongée?

The stretched version, with the ellipse drawn out along the wrist until it becomes dramatic rather than discreet. It is the Baignoire collectors want, and it is closely related in silhouette to the Crash.

130What is the Cartier Pebble?

A 1972 Cartier London design in which a round dial sits inside a square case rotated to stand on its corner. Around 150 were made originally. Cartier reissued it in 2019 in a similarly small run, and both versions are difficult to find.

131What is the Tank Cintrée Privé?

The 2021 Privé release, reviving the 1921 Tank Cintrée at close to its original proportions: long, narrow and curved along the wrist. It was the release that made the wider market pay attention to what Privé was doing.

132Are Privé watches limited?

Yes, in numbered runs generally in the low hundreds per metal, sometimes fewer. Cartier does not always publish exact quantities. The scarcity is real rather than manufactured, which is why the secondary market behaves the way it does.

133Do Privé watches hold value?

They are the strongest performing Cartier watches by some distance, and most have traded above retail from release. They are also the least liquid part of the range, because the buyer pool is small and specialised. Strong appreciation and slow sales are not contradictory.

134How do you buy a Cartier Privé?

At retail, through a boutique relationship, and allocations go to established clients. Most buyers acquire them on the secondary market instead. Hollywood Gems sources Privé references on request: (323) 991-9697.

Section 07

Movements and calibres

Cartier spent most of its history buying movements and selling design, which collectors held against it for years. That changed from the late 2000s: the maison now builds its own calibres, runs a Fine Watchmaking division producing tourbillons and mystery movements, and has had movements certified with the Geneva Seal. The table maps the range and the 20 answers cover what is inside.

Table 7 · Key Cartier calibres

Calibre Type Found in Note
430 MC Ultra-thin hand-wound Tank Louis Cartier, Santos-Dumont Around 2.15mm thick
1904 MC Automatic Calibre de Cartier, Drive, some Santos Cartier's first in-house automatic at volume, 2010
1847 MC Automatic Santos de Cartier, Ballon Bleu, Clé 2015, anti-magnetic construction
9611 MC Hand-wound Privé shaped cases Built for narrow, shaped cases
9452 MC Flying tourbillon Fine Watchmaking First Cartier calibre to receive the Geneva Seal, 2008
9981 MC Mysterious hours Rotonde Mystérieuse Hands appear to float, unconnected to the movement
9451 MC Astrotourbillon Rotonde Astrotourbillon Tourbillon carriage orbits the dial as the seconds hand
SolarBeat Photovoltaic Tank Must Light passes through the Roman numerals to solar cells

135Are Cartier watches automatic?

Many are, and many are not. The Santos de Cartier, the larger Ballon Bleu and Tank Américaine references are automatic. The Tank Louis Cartier is hand-wound. The Tank Must, the Panthère and much of the smaller range are quartz. Check the reference rather than the model name.

136Do Cartier watches have batteries?

Some do. Cartier has never hidden that it makes quartz watches, and in a design-led house that is a legitimate choice rather than a compromise. The Tank Must SolarBeat is neither: it runs on light and Cartier states the cell should last around sixteen years.

137Which Cartier watches are quartz?

Most Panthère references, most Tank Must references, the smaller Ballon Bleu sizes, the Ronde Must in smaller sizes and much of the women's range. Broadly, the smaller and thinner the case, the more likely it is quartz, because a mechanical movement would not fit.

138Is a quartz Cartier worth buying?

If you are buying the case, yes. A quartz Tank is thinner, more accurate and considerably less expensive than a mechanical one, and on the wrist it is the same design. If the movement is the point, buy a Tank Louis Cartier or a Santos de Cartier instead. Neither answer is wrong.

139What is calibre 1847 MC?

Cartier's workhorse automatic, introduced in 2015 and named for the founding year. It powers the Santos de Cartier and much of the automatic range, with around 40 hours of reserve and anti-magnetic components in the escapement. MC stands for Manufacture Cartier.

140What is calibre 1904 MC?

Cartier's first in-house automatic produced at scale, launched in 2010 and named for the year of the Santos. It uses twin barrels for a more even delivery of power and holds around 48 hours. It marked the point where Cartier became a movement manufacturer.

141What is calibre 430 MC?

An ultra-thin hand-wound movement, around 2.15mm thick, derived from a Piaget base within the Richemont group. It is what allows the Tank Louis Cartier and the Santos-Dumont to be as slim as they are. Thinness is the entire brief.

142What is calibre 9611 MC?

A hand-wound movement built specifically for narrow shaped cases, used in Privé releases such as the Tank Cintrée. Making a movement fit an elongated case rather than forcing the case to fit a round movement is the difficult part of what Cartier does.

143What is calibre 9452 MC?

A flying tourbillon calibre that in 2008 became the first Cartier movement to receive the Poinçon de Genève, the Geneva Seal. It was the moment the maison established that it could compete on watchmaking terms and not only on design.

144What is the Cartier Fine Watchmaking collection?

The division Cartier established in 2008 to produce high complications: tourbillons, mystery movements, skeletonised calibres and minute repeaters. It exists to answer the criticism that Cartier was a jeweller borrowing movements, and it has largely done so.

145What is a Cartier mystery clock?

A clock, first made in 1912, in which the hands appear to float in clear crystal with no visible connection to any mechanism. They are mounted on transparent discs with toothed edges, driven from the frame. They are among the most admired objects Cartier has ever produced.

146What is a mysterious hour?

The wristwatch version of the mystery clock principle, with the hands seemingly suspended in a transparent dial. Cartier introduced it as a wristwatch in the 2010s. It is a hundred-year-old trick, shrunk to fit a case, and it still reads as impossible.

147What is the Astrotourbillon?

A Cartier complication in which the tourbillon carriage travels around the whole dial once a minute, so the tourbillon itself is the seconds hand. Most tourbillons rotate in place. This one orbits, which is far harder and considerably more watchable.

148What is the Astrorégulateur?

A complication in which the regulating organ is mounted on the winding rotor, so gravity always acts on it from the same direction as the watch moves. It attacks the same problem a tourbillon addresses, by an entirely different route.

149How accurate is a Cartier?

Cartier does not publish a blanket accuracy figure the way some houses do. Its mechanical movements are regulated to normal Swiss standards and its quartz references are accurate to a few seconds a month, as all quartz is. Accuracy is not where this brand competes.

150Is Cartier COSC certified?

Not across the range. Cartier does not submit its production movements to COSC as standard, and it does not market itself on chronometry. Selected Fine Watchmaking calibres carry the Geneva Seal instead, which covers finishing as well as performance.

151What is the Poinçon de Genève on a Cartier?

The Geneva Seal, a certification for movements made and finished to a defined standard within the canton of Geneva. Cartier received it for a flying tourbillon calibre in 2008 and has applied it to selected Fine Watchmaking pieces since. It is rare on a Cartier and worth knowing when you see it.

152What is the power reserve of a Cartier?

Around 40 hours on the 1847 MC and roughly 48 on the 1904 MC, with the ultra-thin 430 MC closer to 38. Quartz references run for years on a cell, and the SolarBeat Tank Must runs on light. There is no single figure across the range.

153How do you wind a Cartier?

Turn the crown clockwise while it sits against the case. On a hand-wound Tank Louis, wind it at the same time each day and stop when you feel resistance. On an automatic, 20 to 30 turns will start a stopped watch. Quartz references need no winding at all.

154Does a Cartier need a winder?

No. Most of the range is either quartz or hand-wound, and neither benefits from one. On an automatic Santos or Ballon Bleu a winder is convenience rather than maintenance, and hand-winding takes under a minute.

Unsure whether a reference is quartz or mechanical? Send it to info@hollywoodgems.com or call (323) 991-9697.

Section 08

References and serial numbers

Cartier reference numbers are less readable than most. They begin with a W, carry a block of letters that encode collection and metal, and end in digits, but Cartier has never published the key and the system has changed over the decades. Serial numbers sit on the caseback and do not decode to a year. The 16 answers below cover what can and cannot be established from the numbers.

155How do Cartier reference numbers work?

A modern reference such as WSSA0018 opens with a W for watch, follows with letters encoding the collection, metal and configuration, and ends with digits identifying the specific version. Cartier has never published the full key, so the reading in circulation is convention rather than documentation.

156What does the W prefix mean on a Cartier?

Watch. Every modern Cartier watch reference begins with it. Jewellery uses a different prefix, which is the quickest way to tell from a reference alone which side of the maison a piece came from.

157What does WSSA mean?

It identifies a Santos de Cartier in steel, with the digits that follow specifying size and configuration. The letter groups are consistent enough within a collection to be useful but they are not a published system, so treat any decoding as a guide rather than proof.

158What does CRW mean on a Cartier reference?

CR is a prefix some retailers and databases add to indicate Cartier, so CRWSSA0018 and WSSA0018 are the same watch. It is not part of Cartier's own reference. If a listing uses it, drop the CR when searching elsewhere.

159Where is the Cartier reference number?

Engraved on the caseback on most modern watches, and printed on the paperwork supplied with the watch. On some older references it appears between the lugs. A reference on the papers that disagrees with the case is a reason to stop and verify.

160How do Cartier serial numbers work?

Each watch carries a serial unique to it, engraved on the caseback. Modern serials are alphanumeric and older ones numeric. Cartier has never released a chart linking serials to production years, so the number identifies the watch rather than dating it.

161Where is the Cartier serial number?

On the caseback, usually alongside the reference. On vintage pieces it can sit inside the caseback or between the lugs, which means the back has to come off. Record both the reference and the serial before any private-party purchase.

162Can you date a Cartier from the serial number?

Not reliably from published information. Approximate ranges circulate among collectors for certain periods, compiled by third parties rather than by Cartier. The more dependable route is the reference generation, the movement fitted and the style of the case markings.

163What is a Cartier case number?

On many Cartier watches the serial engraved on the caseback serves as the case identifier. Vintage pieces, particularly those made by Cartier London or Cartier New York, can carry separate case and movement numbers, which is part of what makes them harder to authenticate.

164What is a Cartier movement number?

A number on the movement itself, distinct from the case serial. It is only visible with the caseback removed, which is one reason a proper inspection means opening the watch rather than photographing it.

165Does Cartier have an archive service?

Cartier maintains extensive historical archives in Paris and the Cartier Collection of historic pieces, and research on a significant vintage watch can sometimes be arranged through a boutique. It is not a standard published consumer service in the way some Swiss houses operate, so do not assume it will be available.

166What is a Cartier Certificate of Authenticity?

A document Cartier can issue for certain pieces confirming what the watch is, generally arranged through a boutique and most often sought for vintage. Availability and cost vary, and Cartier does not guarantee it for every watch. Ask before assuming it can be obtained.

167What do Cartier papers look like?

A modern Cartier is supplied with a warranty certificate recording the reference and serial, the retailer and the date, together with booklets and the red presentation box. Papers support a watch rather than proving it, because documents can be reproduced.

168Does Cartier keep production records?

Cartier holds historical records going back into the nineteenth century, and the Cartier Collection has been assembled partly from them. How much of that is accessible to an individual owner is another matter, and it is considerably less open than the archive services some competitors run.

169What is a Cartier warranty card?

The card issued at purchase recording the reference, the serial, the retailer and the date, which starts the international warranty. It is the document buyers on the secondary market most often ask about, and its absence lowers the figure without affecting whether the watch is genuine.

170Can Cartier identify an old watch?

Often, through a boutique or service centre, particularly for pieces from the Paris, London and New York houses where records exist. It is not a guaranteed service and it can take time. For a quick identification, send the reference and photographs to info@hollywoodgems.com.

Section 09

Design codes, materials and dials

Cartier works from a fixed set of design codes that appear across every collection: Roman numerals, blued steel sword hands, a cabochon set into the crown, and a railway-track minute ring. Learn those four and you can identify a Cartier from across a room, on any case shape, from any decade. The table lists them and the 20 answers below explain each one.

Table 8 · The Cartier design codes

Code What it is Where it appears
Roman numerals Printed or applied Roman hour markers Almost the entire range
Sword hands Tapered blade-shaped hands, heat-blued steel Almost the entire range
Cabochon crown A domed stone set into the winding crown Almost the entire range
Chemin de fer Railway-track minute ring around the dial edge Tank, Santos, Ronde, Ballon Bleu
Secret signature CARTIER concealed inside a Roman numeral Most modern references
Brancards The vertical bars framing the case and meeting the strap Tank, Santos
Exposed screws Functional bezel screws, a 1904 detail Santos, Pasha

171What are the Cartier design codes?

A consistent visual language the maison applies across every collection: Roman numerals, blued steel sword hands, a cabochon stone in the crown, a chemin de fer minute track and the secret signature. They are why a Tank and a Ballon Bleu, which share no shape at all, still read as the same brand.

172Why do Cartier watches have Roman numerals?

Because Cartier established them as its signature in the early twentieth century and has never had a reason to stop. They suit a shaped case in a way Arabic numerals do not, and they carry the formality the maison trades on. Where Cartier uses other numerals it is usually a deliberate departure.

173What are Cartier sword hands?

Hands shaped like a blade, wide at the base and tapering to a point, with the hour hand shorter and broader than the minute. They are one of the most copied hand designs in watchmaking and one of the clearest Cartier identifiers.

174Why are Cartier hands blued?

Heat-blued steel gives a deep blue that shifts with the light and contrasts against a silvered dial without needing paint. It is a traditional finish achieved by heating the steel to a precise temperature. On some modern references the effect is achieved chemically rather than by heat.

175What is the Cartier cabochon?

The domed, unfaceted stone set into the winding crown. It has been a Cartier signature since the early Santos and Tank, and it is the detail that turns a functional component into jewellery. Almost every Cartier watch has one.

176What stone is the Cartier cabochon?

On steel watches it is generally a blue synthetic spinel. On precious-metal references Cartier uses a sapphire, and gem-set pieces can carry a diamond or a coloured stone. The material is one of the differences between an entry reference and a gold one that buyers rarely notice.

177What is the chemin de fer minute track?

The minute ring drawn as two parallel lines with cross-hatching between them, resembling a railway track, which is what chemin de fer means. It runs around the outer edge of the dial and it is one of the oldest Cartier dial details still in use.

178What is the Cartier secret signature?

The word CARTIER printed at microscopic size inside one of the Roman numerals, invisible to the naked eye. Cartier introduced it in the 1920s as an anti-counterfeiting measure. It is a nice piece of history and it is no longer a reliable test, because counterfeiters reproduce it.

179Where is the Cartier secret signature?

Concealed within one of the Roman numerals, most often the X at ten o'clock, though the position varies by model and era. A loupe and good light are needed to find it. Its presence proves very little on its own and its absence on an older watch proves nothing either.

180What metals does Cartier use?

Stainless steel, 18-carat yellow, rose and white gold, and platinum on a small number of references. Historic Les Must pieces used vermeil, which is gold over sterling silver. Gem-set versions exist across most of the range.

181Does Cartier use stainless steel?

Yes, widely, and unlike at Patek Philippe it carries no scarcity premium. Steel is the entry material across the Tank Must, Santos de Cartier, Ballon Bleu and Ronde Must. It is where most of the volume sits.

182Does Cartier use rose gold?

Yes, across the Tank, Santos, Ballon Bleu and Panthère, on its own and combined with steel. Cartier's rose gold reads slightly warmer than some houses use, which suits the maison's jewellery heritage.

183Does Cartier use platinum?

On a small number of references, generally Privé releases and Fine Watchmaking pieces. Platinum is not a standard catalogue material at Cartier the way gold is, so a platinum Cartier is unusual and usually limited.

184What crystal does Cartier use?

Synthetic sapphire on all modern watches, frequently domed or curved to follow the case, which is considerably harder to produce than a flat one. Vintage Cartiers use mineral glass or acrylic, which scratch far more easily and can be polished.

185Do Cartier watches have sapphire crystals?

Yes, throughout the current range. On the Ballon Bleu and Tank Cintrée the sapphire is curved in two directions, which is expensive to make and part of why those cases cost what they do. A curved sapphire is also more expensive to replace if damaged.

186What is a Cartier guilloché dial?

A dial with a repeating geometric pattern cut into the metal on an engine-turning lathe, catching light as the wrist moves. Cartier uses it on the Ronde Louis Cartier and on Privé pieces, and it is one of the decorative techniques the maison inherited from its jewellery side.

187What is a Cartier lacquered dial?

A dial finished with layers of coloured lacquer built up and polished to a deep, glassy surface. Cartier uses it for the strong dial colours on Privé and limited pieces. It is harder to get right than it looks, because the surface shows every imperfection.

188Does Cartier use lume?

Sparingly. The Santos de Cartier and a few other references carry luminous hands and markers. Most of the range does not, because luminous material would sit badly against the Roman numerals and the dial proportions. It is one of the most common surprises for a first-time buyer.

189Why do Cartier watches have no lume?

Because the dial is the design. Printed Roman numerals and fine blued hands cannot carry luminous paint without becoming something else, and Cartier has consistently chosen the look over night legibility. If reading the time in the dark matters, the Santos is the reference to consider.

190What is a Cartier deployant clasp?

A folding clasp that opens outward rather than a pin buckle, so the strap forms a closed loop and is not bent every time it is worn. Cartier fits them across much of the range. They extend strap life considerably and make the watch easier to put on one-handed.

Section 10

Sizing and fit

Cartier sizes by name rather than by millimetre — Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large — and the same name means different dimensions on different models. Shaped cases also measure differently from round ones: a Tank quoted at 25mm wide wears nothing like a 25mm round watch. The table gives the actual figures and the 14 answers below cover fit.

Table 9 · Approximate case dimensions

Model Size Dimensions
Panthère Small Approx. 22 × 30mm
Panthère Medium Approx. 27 × 37mm
Tank Louis Cartier Small Approx. 29.5 × 22mm
Tank Louis Cartier Large Approx. 33.7 × 25.5mm
Tank Must Large Approx. 33.7 × 25.5mm
Tank Must Extra Large Approx. 41 × 31mm
Santos de Cartier Medium Approx. 35.1 × 41.9mm
Santos de Cartier Large Approx. 39.8 × 47.5mm
Ballon Bleu Range 28, 33, 36, 40 and 42mm

191What Cartier sizes are there?

Cartier uses Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large rather than quoting millimetres in its model names. The actual dimensions differ by model, so a Large Tank and a Large Santos are not the same size. Always check the figures rather than the name.

192What is the difference between Small, Medium and Large at Cartier?

Roughly 4 to 6mm in each dimension between steps, which on a shaped case is more noticeable than the same gap on a round one. The naming is relative to the model, not absolute across the brand. A Large Panthère is smaller than a Small Santos.

193What size Tank should I buy?

The Large for most adult wrists, at roughly 33.7 by 25.5mm. The Small suits wrists under about 15.5cm and is worn mostly by women, though not exclusively. The Extra Large Tank Must at 41 by 31mm is a statement rather than a default.

194What size Santos should I buy?

The Medium at roughly 35 by 42mm suits most wrists and is the more versatile of the two. The Large at roughly 40 by 47mm needs a wrist above about 17cm to sit properly, because the square case uses all of its width.

195Is a Small Cartier too small for a man?

Not necessarily, and this is one of the few brands where the question genuinely does not carry. Small Tanks are worn by men routinely, and the model was designed in an era when all watches were small. It depends on the wrist and on how loudly you want the watch to speak.

196Is a Large Cartier too big for a woman?

No. Large Tanks and Medium Santos are worn widely by women, and a larger case on a smaller wrist has been a deliberate look for years. Cartier's sizing has never been a rule about who wears what.

197Are Cartier watches unisex?

More so than almost any other brand at this level. Cartier sizes rather than genders most of its collections, and the Tank, Santos, Ballon Bleu and Baignoire are all worn across the board. It is one of the reasons the maison has the customer base it does.

198How should a Cartier fit?

Flat on the wrist with a small amount of movement. On a Tank the brancards should sit within the width of the wrist rather than overhanging. On a Santos the bracelet should be snug enough that the square case does not rotate to one side when the arm hangs.

199Can you resize a Cartier bracelet?

Yes. On a Santos de Cartier from 2018 onward, SmartLink lets links be removed or added by hand with no tools. On the Panthère, the Tank Française and older references, it is a job for a watchmaker or the retailer. Keep any links removed.

200Can you change a Cartier strap?

On the Santos, in seconds, using QuickSwitch. On other models it needs a spring bar tool or a watchmaker, and Cartier straps are shaped to meet the brancards so a generic strap will not sit correctly. Buy the strap for the model.

201What strap sizes does Cartier use?

Cartier straps are specified per model and size rather than by a standard lug width, because on a Tank or Santos the strap meets the brancards rather than sitting between conventional lugs. Order by reference, not by millimetre.

202Are Cartier straps interchangeable?

Within a model and size, yes. Across models, generally not, because the strap end is shaped to the case. A Tank Must strap will not fit a Santos and a Large strap will not fit a Small. This catches people out when buying straps second-hand.

203How thick is a Cartier Tank?

A Tank Louis Cartier is around 6 to 7mm, which is genuinely thin and much of why it slides under a cuff so easily. Quartz references are thinner again. The automatic Tanks add a couple of millimetres.

204How heavy is a steel Santos?

A Large Santos de Cartier on the steel bracelet is in the region of 130 grams, which is substantial without being heavy. The Medium is noticeably lighter, and on a strap either size drops considerably.

Section 11

Water resistance and daily wear

Most of the Cartier range is rated to 30 metres, which covers rain and hand-washing and nothing more. Two models go further: the Santos de Cartier and the Pasha are both rated to 100 metres and are the only Cartiers built for water. Anyone buying a Tank as a daily watch should know that before, not after. The 12 answers below set out the numbers.

Table 10 · Water resistance by model

Model Rating Suitable for
Tank Louis Cartier 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Tank Must 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Tank Française · Américaine 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Panthère 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Ballon Bleu 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Ronde 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Santos-Dumont 30 metres / 100 feet Rain and hand-washing
Santos de Cartier 100 metres / 330 feet Swimming
Pasha de Cartier 100 metres / 330 feet Swimming

205Are Cartier watches water resistant?

To a degree. Most of the range is rated to 30 metres, which means rain, hand-washing and not much else. The Santos de Cartier and the Pasha are rated to 100 metres and are the exceptions. Cartier is a jeweller's house and the ratings reflect that.

206How water resistant is the Tank?

30 metres across the Tank line, including the Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Must, Française and Américaine. That covers getting caught in rain and washing your hands. It does not cover swimming, and a thin dress case was never intended to.

207How water resistant is the Santos?

The Santos de Cartier is rated to 100 metres, the highest in the range, with a screw-down crown. The thinner Santos-Dumont is 30 metres. The two share a name and a silhouette and are built for different lives.

208How water resistant is the Ballon Bleu?

30 metres. The domed case and the crown guard arc look protective but the rating is a dress-watch rating. Treat it as such regardless of how substantial the watch feels in the hand.

209Can you swim with a Cartier?

With a Santos de Cartier or a Pasha, yes, within their 100-metre rating and with the crown properly closed. With anything rated to 30 metres, no. That covers most of the catalogue, so check the specific reference before assuming.

210Can you shower with a Cartier?

Better not to, on any of them. Hot water and soap are harder on gaskets than cold water, and on a 30-metre watch the margin is small to begin with. Even on a Santos it shortens the life of the seals. Take it off.

211Can you wear a Cartier every day?

Yes, with the right model. The Santos de Cartier is built for it. A Tank or a Ballon Bleu will cope with an ordinary working day but is not a watch for the beach or the gym. Match the reference to the life rather than expecting one watch to do both.

212Does a Cartier scratch easily?

The polished surfaces mark as readily as any polished watch, and Cartier uses a lot of polished surface. Gold marks more easily than steel. The sapphire crystal resists almost everything, but on curved crystals a deep mark means replacement rather than polishing.

213Can you wear a Cartier to the gym?

The Santos will survive it. Everything else should stay off. Beyond the water resistance question, polished gold against a barbell is an expensive mistake, and a 30-metre case plus sweat is a poor combination over time.

214Is a Cartier a good everyday watch?

The Santos de Cartier is among the best everyday watches at its price: automatic, 100 metres, a bracelet that resizes by hand and a strap that swaps in seconds. The rest of the range is better suited to office and evening wear than to an active week.

215Should you insure a Cartier?

For anything in gold or above a few thousand dollars, yes. Home contents policies commonly cap single-item cover below what a gold Tank is worth, and worldwide cover for watches and jewellery usually has to be added specifically. Keep the reference, the serial and a dated record.

216Can you fly with a Cartier?

Yes. Cabin pressure and altitude have no effect on a mechanical or quartz movement. Wear it rather than packing it in checked luggage, and make sure any travel insurance covers it at current value rather than at what was paid.

Section 12

Value, investment and resale

Cartier behaves differently from the Swiss sports-watch brands, and applying their logic here produces the wrong answer. Vintage and limited Cartier has appreciated dramatically over the last decade. Entry steel and quartz references resell at a discount, as entry watches generally do. Both facts are true at once. Nothing below is investment advice, and every figure moves. The 26 answers cover what drives value.

217Is a Cartier a good investment?

Some Cartiers have been among the best-performing watches of the last decade, and others depreciate like any entry-level purchase. The split runs roughly along vintage, limited and precious metal on one side, and modern steel quartz on the other. Buy the watch you want to wear and treat value as secondary.

218Does Cartier hold its value?

It depends entirely on the reference, more so than at any other brand in this tier. A vintage Tank Louis or a Privé piece holds extremely well. A new steel quartz Tank Must does not, and was never priced as though it would. The model name tells you very little on its own.

219Which Cartier holds value best?

Privé releases first, then vintage Cartier London pieces, then gold Tank Louis Cartier references. The Crash sits in its own category. Among current production, the steel Santos de Cartier is the most dependable, because it is mechanical and wearable and the buyer pool is wide.

220Does the Tank hold value?

Gold, mechanical Tanks do, and vintage examples have risen sharply. Steel quartz Tanks behave like entry watches and resell below retail. The Tank Louis Cartier is the reference to look at if retained value matters; the Tank Must is the one to buy if it does not.

221Does the Santos hold value?

Better than most of the modern range. It is automatic, water resistant to 100 metres and genuinely wearable, which broadens demand well beyond Cartier collectors. Steel Santos de Cartier references trade actively on the secondary market.

222Does the Ballon Bleu hold value?

It trades in a wider and more liquid market than most Cartiers, which is a function of how many were made. That depth means it sells easily and at a predictable figure rather than at a premium. Gold and automatic versions hold considerably better than steel quartz.

223Do quartz Cartiers hold value?

Less well than mechanical references, because the collector market prices movements even when the buyer does not. That is a statement about how the secondary market behaves rather than about the watch, which is the same case on the same wrist either way.

224Do steel Cartiers hold value?

Reasonably, but steel carries no scarcity premium here. This is the opposite of Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, where steel is the rarest material and trades above gold. At Cartier steel is the entry material and prices accordingly.

225Do gold Cartiers hold value?

Yes, and better than steel, which again inverts the pattern at the Swiss sports houses. Gold carries a metal floor that rises with bullion, and Cartier's collector demand concentrates on precious metal rather than away from it. A gold Tank Louis is the clearest example.

226Does the Crash hold value?

The Crash is among the strongest-performing watches of any brand. Original Cartier London examples have reached seven figures and modern Privé versions trade well above retail. The market is thin and moves sharply in both directions, which is the risk attached to that performance.

227Do Privé pieces appreciate?

Most have, from release. Production runs are small, the shapes are historically significant and the audience is committed. They are also the least liquid part of the range: strong appreciation and slow selling go together when the buyer pool is specialised.

228Has Cartier gone up in value?

Substantially, particularly vintage. A decade ago a good vintage Tank was an affordable way into serious collecting. That window has closed on the better references, and Cartier London pieces in particular have multiplied several times over.

229Why have Cartier prices risen?

Collector taste moved. After a decade dominated by steel sports watches, attention swung toward shaped dress watches, and Cartier owns that category outright. The Privé programme gave collectors something serious to chase, and prominent wearers did the rest. Underlying it all, Cartier was undervalued relative to its history.

230Will Cartier prices go down?

Nobody can forecast it. Vintage Cartier has risen steeply and quickly, which is the profile of a market with something to give back if taste shifts again. Against that, the supply of good vintage is finite and shrinking. Anyone stating a direction with confidence is guessing.

231Does box and papers affect Cartier value?

Yes, and increasingly so as the collector market has matured. A complete set with the red box and the warranty certificate commands a premium. On vintage, where paperwork rarely survives, its presence can move the figure considerably.

232Does polishing reduce Cartier value?

Severely, and more than most buyers expect. Cartier cases are thin and shaped, with defined edges where the brancards meet the case. Polishing rounds those edges and there is very little metal to lose. On vintage it is the single biggest destroyer of value.

233Does service history affect Cartier value?

Documented history helps on a mechanical watch. What can reduce value is a service that replaced an original dial or hands with current parts, which is common on vintage Cartier and materially changes what the watch is. Ask specifically what was changed.

234What affects Cartier resale value?

Metal and movement first, then whether the case has been polished, then originality of the dial and hands, then completeness. On vintage, whether the watch came from Paris, London or New York matters as well, and London pieces command the strongest premium.

235Why is vintage Cartier so expensive now?

Because the supply is fixed and the audience grew. Cartier made these shapes in small numbers, most did not survive unpolished, and the collector market discovered them roughly a decade ago. The Cartier London pieces of the 1960s and 1970s were made in the lowest numbers of all.

236Is vintage Cartier a good buy?

It can be, with care. The risks are specific: redialled watches, replacement hands, over-polished cases and movements swapped during service. Those are all assessable by someone who knows the period. Buying vintage Cartier from a general seller without inspection is where people get hurt.

237Which vintage Cartier should I buy?

A vermeil Must de Cartier Tank is the least expensive genuine entry and still looks right. A gold Tank Louis Cartier is the classic answer. A Santos Galbée is the value option in steel and gold. Above those sit the London pieces and the shaped rarities, where prices become serious.

238Is Cartier a better investment than Rolex?

Rolex is the more liquid and more predictable: it sells faster at a figure you can estimate in advance. Cartier has produced larger gains at the top end, concentrated in vintage and limited pieces, with far more variation between references. They are different kinds of bet.

239Is Cartier a better investment than Omega?

At the collector end, Cartier's vintage and Privé pieces have outperformed. At the everyday end the two behave similarly, with both depreciating from retail on entry references. Omega carries more mechanical credibility; Cartier carries more design recognition. Hollywood Gems carries both.

240Does Cartier depreciate?

Entry steel and quartz references do, typically and predictably, in the first year. Gold, mechanical, vintage and limited references frequently do the opposite. There is no single figure for the brand, and any percentage quoted as applying to Cartier generally is unreliable.

241Is Cartier overrated?

The usual criticism is that Cartier is a jeweller selling design rather than watchmaking, and for much of the range that is a fair description of what you are buying. Against it: a Cartier flying tourbillon took the Geneva Seal in 2008, and the Tank has outlasted nearly every watch designed since. Both things can be true.

242Why is Cartier suddenly popular?

Collector attention moved away from steel sports watches toward shaped and dress watches, and Cartier is the only house with a century of them. The Privé programme gave the shift something to buy. And after years of Nautilus and Royal Oak premiums, Cartier looked like unusual value for the history attached.

Section 13

What a Cartier costs

Cartier has the widest price range of any house at this level. A steel Tank Must starts around three thousand dollars, which is well below the entry point at Rolex, and the maison also makes seven-figure high jewellery watches. Every figure below was accurate at publication and moves with the market. The 20 answers cover retail, market and payment.

243How much does a Cartier watch cost?

Retail runs from roughly three thousand dollars for a steel Tank Must to tens of thousands for gold references, and into six and seven figures for Privé, Fine Watchmaking and high jewellery. Most transactions sit between three and fifteen thousand. For a figure on a specific reference, call (323) 991-9697.

244What is the least expensive Cartier watch?

A small steel Tank Must, in quartz or SolarBeat, at around three thousand dollars at US retail. It is a genuine Cartier with the same case design and the same design codes as the references above it. There is no sub-brand and no diffusion line.

245How much is a Cartier Tank?

From around three thousand for a steel Tank Must to the low teens of thousands for a gold Tank Louis Cartier, with the Française and Américaine in between depending on metal and movement. The spread within one model name is wider than most people expect.

246How much is a Tank Must?

At publication, steel Tank Must references sat in the region of three to five thousand dollars at US retail depending on size and movement, with the larger automatic above that. It is the least expensive route into the maison.

247How much is a Cartier Santos?

Steel Santos de Cartier references sat in the region of seven to eight thousand dollars at US retail, with two-tone and gold versions considerably higher. It is the most expensive steel watch Cartier makes and the most capable.

248How much is a Ballon Bleu?

Steel references sat in the region of six to eight thousand dollars at US retail depending on size and whether the movement is quartz or automatic. Gold versions run well into five figures, and gem-set considerably beyond.

249How much is a Cartier Panthère?

Steel references start in the region of four to five thousand dollars, with two-tone above that and gold versions in five figures. Because so much of the cost sits in the bracelet, the metal moves the price more here than on a strap-mounted watch.

250What is the most expensive Cartier?

High jewellery watches and grand complications, sold on application and reaching seven figures. At auction, rare Cartier London Crash examples have passed a million dollars, which is remarkable for a watch with a simple movement. The case is the whole value.

251Why are Cartier watches expensive?

Shaped cases are considerably harder to make than round ones, and Cartier finishes them to jewellery standards. Add in-house movements across much of the range, hand-set stones on a large part of it, and a brand that has held the top of two categories for a century.

252Is Cartier cheaper than Rolex?

At the entry point, considerably. A steel Tank Must is roughly half the retail price of the least expensive Rolex, and it is available to buy rather than allocated. Higher up, a gold Cartier and a gold Rolex land in similar territory. The difference is most pronounced where people are actually shopping.

253Does Cartier publish its prices?

Yes, for current catalogue models on cartier.com, set per market. Those prices apply to new watches through boutiques and authorized retailers. They say nothing about discontinued references or vintage, which is where a great deal of Cartier demand sits.

254Does Cartier raise prices every year?

Cartier adjusts retail prices regularly and the direction has been consistently upward, driven by gold prices, currency movement and demand. Increases are not announced in advance. Secondary-market and vintage prices move on their own cycle.

255What is the Cartier retail price versus market price?

Retail is what a boutique charges for a current model, and most of the catalogue is available at it. Market is what a reference trades for elsewhere, which on modern steel usually sits below retail and on Privé, Crash and good vintage sits well above it.

256Why is there no price on some Cartier listings?

Because a published figure would be wrong within weeks on anything vintage or limited. Values move with demand, condition and metal prices. Hollywood Gems lists most references as price on request and quotes against the market on the day.

257What does price on request mean?

The price is quoted when you ask, against the current market, rather than fixed on the page. Send the reference or use the enquiry form and a figure comes back with the specification confirmed. Call (323) 991-9697 or email info@hollywoodgems.com.

258Can you finance a Cartier?

Financing is available through Hollywood Gems. Terms depend on the piece and the buyer, so it is handled on a call rather than through a published table. Raise it when you enquire: (323) 991-9697.

259Can you buy a Cartier on installments?

Installment arrangements form part of the financing conversation rather than a fixed product. What is available depends on the piece, the amount and the buyer. Raise it at the point of enquiry.

260Can you buy a Cartier with a credit card?

At Hollywood Gems, purchases under fifteen thousand dollars can be settled by credit card, which covers most of the Cartier range. Above that, payment is by wire transfer.

261Are Cartier watches cheaper in France?

French VAT is 20 per cent and reclaimable by non-EU visitors on departure, which makes the headline figure look attractive. Against that sit the exchange rate, the French retail list and US import duty on the way home. Buying at rue de la Paix is an experience rather than a saving.

262Can you claim VAT back on a Cartier bought abroad?

Non-residents can generally reclaim VAT on goods carried out of the country, through the retailer's refund scheme and a customs desk at departure. The paperwork must be started at purchase. A watch brought into the United States must be declared, and duty is normally payable.

Section 14

Buying a Cartier

Cartier is one of the few houses at this level where most of the catalogue can simply be bought. There is no allocation game on a Tank Must or a Santos. Where it gets difficult is Privé, limited editions and good vintage, and that is where a dealer earns their keep. The 20 answers below cover both ends.

263Where can you buy a Cartier watch?

From a Cartier boutique, from an authorized retailer, or on the secondary market through independent dealers, auction houses and private sales. Current models are generally available at retail. Discontinued, limited and vintage references are not, and that is where the secondary market matters.

264Can you buy a Cartier online?

Yes. Established dealers sell Cartier online routinely and it is how most secondary-market and vintage transactions happen. Hollywood Gems sells online across the United States, with every watch authenticated before it ships. Browse the Cartier collection or call (323) 991-9697.

265Is it safe to buy a Cartier online?

From a dealer with a verifiable record, yes. Check for reviews on an independent platform rather than testimonials on the dealer's own site, a stated authentication process, photographs of the actual watch including its numbers, and a phone number a person answers. Hollywood Gems is a Chrono24 Trusted Seller with 332 five-star reviews.

266What is an authorized Cartier retailer?

A retailer appointed by Cartier to sell new watches at recommended retail prices. Cartier also operates its own boutiques directly, which is less common at this level and gives the maison more control over how it sells than most of its competitors have.

267Is there a waiting list for Cartier?

Not for the mainline catalogue. A Tank Must, a Santos or a Ballon Bleu can generally be bought on the day. Privé releases and limited editions are a different matter and go to established boutique clients, which is why they appear on the secondary market at a premium.

268Which Cartier is hardest to buy?

Anything from Privé, above all the Crash. After that, limited editions, platinum references and good original vintage, particularly Cartier London pieces. The difficulty is scarcity rather than allocation politics, which is a meaningful difference from how Rolex and Patek Philippe operate.

269Should you buy a Cartier new or used?

New from a boutique gives you the warranty and an untouched watch, and most of the range is available. The secondary market gives access to discontinued references, vintage and Privé, and on entry models it is frequently a large saving because those references depreciate. Both routes are legitimate.

270Is buying vintage Cartier risky?

More than buying vintage from most brands, and it is worth knowing why. Redialled watches are common, replacement hands are common, cases are frequently over-polished, and movements were often swapped during past services. None of that is visible in a photograph, which is the whole problem.

271What should you check before buying a Cartier?

Confirm the reference and serial against the case and any papers. Establish whether the dial and hands are original and whether the case has been polished. On vintage, ask which house made it and whether the movement is period-correct. Then check the seller as carefully as the watch.

272What comes in the box with a Cartier?

The watch in the red presentation box, a warranty certificate recording the reference, serial, retailer and date, and an instruction booklet. Some references include a second strap or a tool. Everything should stay with the watch, because a complete set matters on resale.

273Does a Cartier need papers?

A watch is not less genuine without them, but they affect the figure and they make resale easier. On vintage, papers rarely survive and their absence is normal rather than suspicious. On a modern watch, missing papers raise more questions.

274Can you buy a Cartier without papers?

Yes, and a large share of the market trades that way, especially anything older than a decade. Expect to pay less than for a complete set. What matters is that the watch itself has been authenticated by someone competent to do it.

275Will Cartier engrave a watch?

Caseback engraving can be arranged through a boutique, and Cartier has a long tradition of it on gifted pieces. It is permanent and it reduces resale value, because the next buyer is paying for an unmarked case. Worth thinking past the occasion before committing.

276Does Cartier do bespoke watches?

In high jewellery, yes, and commissioning one-off pieces is a real part of that business. In watches it is far more limited and restricted to significant clients. For most buyers, Privé and limited editions are as close to bespoke as the maison offers.

277Which Cartier is best for a first luxury watch?

A Tank Must, without much argument. It is the least expensive genuine entry into a major maison, the design is over a century old and has never dated, and it fits under a cuff. If the requirement is mechanical, a Tank Louis Cartier or a Santos de Cartier instead.

278Which Cartier is best for a gift?

A Tank, for the same reasons it works as a first watch: recognisable, timeless and hard to get wrong. A Panthère if the recipient wants jewellery more than a watch. Consider leaving the engraving off, because it limits what they can do with it later.

279Which Cartier is best for a woman?

Cartier sizes rather than genders most of its range, so the honest answer is whichever size and shape suits. The Panthère and the smaller Tank and Ballon Bleu references are the most commonly chosen. The Baignoire is the collector's answer.

280Which Cartier is best for a man?

A Large Tank Louis Cartier for formality, a Santos de Cartier for daily wear, or a 40mm Ballon Bleu for something in between. Nothing in the range is off limits by size, and men wear the smaller Tanks routinely.

281Is a Cartier a good wedding watch?

It is among the best choices for one. A Tank is formal without being ostentatious, it photographs well against a cuff, and it is a design that will still look correct in thirty years. Cartier's jewellery heritage gives it an association with occasions that a sports watch does not have.

282How do you buy a discontinued Cartier?

On the secondary market, through a dealer who can authenticate it. A great deal of the most interesting Cartier is discontinued, including the Clé, the Drive, earlier Pasha and Santos generations and most of the vintage shapes. Hollywood Gems sources on request: (323) 991-9697.

Section 15

Authenticity

Cartier is among the most counterfeited watch brands in the world, and vintage Cartier carries a second problem on top of that: watches that are genuine but no longer original. Redials, replacement hands and swapped movements are common. Both questions are settled by inspection rather than by photographs. The 14 answers below cover verification.

283How do you know if a Cartier is real?

Through inspection by a qualified watchmaker, ideally with the caseback off so the movement can be compared against what the reference should carry. On vintage, originality of the dial and hands matters as much as authenticity of the case. Hollywood Gems authenticates every watch it sells.

284Will Cartier authenticate a watch?

Not as a standalone consumer service. A boutique or service centre will assess a watch submitted for servicing and decline work on one that is not genuine. Cartier can sometimes issue documentation on significant vintage pieces, but that is arranged case by case rather than offered as standard.

285What is master-watchmaker authentication?

Assessment by a trained watchmaker who opens the case and examines the movement rather than judging from the outside. It is the highest level of confidence available short of the manufacturer. Hollywood Gems makes it available on request for watches it sells.

286Can Cartier papers be faked?

Yes. Warranty certificates, booklets and the red boxes are all reproduced, and a complete set proves nothing on its own. Paperwork supports a watch that has already been authenticated. Verify the watch, not the folder it came in.

287Does the secret signature prove a Cartier is authentic?

No, not any more. Cartier introduced the hidden CARTIER lettering inside a Roman numeral in the 1920s as an anti-counterfeiting measure, and it worked for decades. Counterfeiters now reproduce it. Its presence tells you almost nothing and its absence on an older watch tells you nothing either.

288What is a Frankenwatch?

A watch assembled from parts of different watches, or from a mixture of genuine and non-genuine components. The case may be authentic while the dial, hands or movement came from elsewhere. On vintage Cartier these are more common than outright copies and harder to spot.

289What are aftermarket Cartier parts?

Components not made by Cartier and fitted outside the maison: replacement dials, hands, gem-set bezels, non-original straps and bracelets. Aftermarket diamond setting on a Tank or Santos is the most common and the most damaging.

290Do aftermarket parts affect Cartier value?

Substantially. Stones added outside the factory can reduce a watch below the value of the plain version it started as, however well the work was done. Establish in writing whether any setting is factory before buying a gem-set Cartier.

291Does Cartier service watches with aftermarket parts?

Cartier sets its own terms and will generally decline to work on watches containing non-genuine components, or require them replaced with original parts. On a gem-set aftermarket piece that can mean the maison will not touch it at all.

292Are there fake Cartier Tanks?

A great many, because the Tank is recognisable, widely worn and simple in construction. The quality of counterfeits has improved to the point where visual checks from photographs are unreliable. The practical answer is to buy from a dealer who authenticates and stands behind it.

293How can you verify a Cartier dealer is legitimate?

Look for a review history on an independent platform rather than testimonials on the dealer's own site, a stated authentication process, photographs of the actual watch including its numbers, and a phone number answered by a person. Hollywood Gems is a Chrono24 Trusted Seller with 332 five-star reviews there and 46 on Google.

294What should you do if you think a Cartier is not genuine?

Stop and take it to an independent watchmaker before doing anything else. If it has already been bought, contact the seller and the payment provider and keep every record of the transaction. Do not attempt to resell a watch whose status is unresolved.

295Is a redialled Cartier still genuine?

The watch is genuine; the dial is not original. That distinction matters enormously to value and it is the single most common issue on vintage Cartier. A redialled Tank can be worth a fraction of an original-dial example of the same reference.

296What is a service dial?

A replacement dial fitted by Cartier during a past service, genuine but not the one the watch left with. It is better than an aftermarket redial and still worth less than an original. Print details and the position of the signature usually give it away to someone who knows the period.

Section 16

Service, care and longevity

Everything in this section describes Cartier's own published guidance and general watchmaking practice. Hollywood Gems is a dealer, not a service centre, and makes no warranty or after-sales claim. The 14 answers below cover intervals, batteries and care.

297How often should a Cartier be serviced?

Cartier's guidance for a mechanical watch is a complete service roughly every five years, sooner if timekeeping drifts or moisture appears. Quartz references need a cell change every few years and a water resistance check at the same time.

298What does a Cartier service involve?

The movement is removed, disassembled, cleaned, worn parts replaced, then reassembled, lubricated and regulated. Gaskets are replaced and the watch is pressure-tested. Case and bracelet refinishing is offered as part of it and can be declined, which on a Cartier is worth doing deliberately.

299How much does a Cartier service cost?

Cartier does not publish a fixed price. Independent reports put a full mechanical service in the region of several hundred to around fifteen hundred dollars depending on the movement, with complications higher and a quartz cell change far less. Service centres quote after assessment.

300How long does a Cartier service take?

Typically several weeks, and longer on vintage or where parts must be sourced. Cartier quotes a timescale once the watch has been assessed. Restoration of a historic piece can run to months.

301Where can a Cartier be serviced?

At a Cartier boutique or service centre, listed on cartier.com, or at an independent watchmaker. Cartier work keeps the watch inside the official system and uses genuine parts. Independents vary widely, and on vintage Cartier the choice of watchmaker matters more than on most brands.

302Does Cartier service vintage watches?

Yes, and the maison maintains a restoration capability for historic pieces. Parts availability sets practical limits on very old watches. Some collectors deliberately use independent specialists instead, to keep original dials and hands that a factory service might replace.

303How long is the Cartier warranty?

Cartier has extended its international warranty on new watches in recent years, with a longer term available when the watch is registered after purchase. The terms supplied with the watch and published on cartier.com are the authority rather than anything quoted secondhand.

304What does the Cartier warranty cover?

Manufacturing defects under the terms Cartier publishes. It does not cover normal wear, accidental damage, theft, or the consequences of unauthorised work or non-genuine parts. Straps and batteries are generally treated as consumables.

305Can a Cartier be polished?

Yes, and refinishing is offered as part of a service unless declined. On a Cartier the decision matters more than on a round watch, because the shaped case has defined edges where the brancards meet the case and the metal is thin. Ask for it to be left alone in writing.

306Should a Cartier be polished?

Generally not, and on vintage definitely not. Polishing softens the case edges permanently and there is very little metal to give. A watch with honest wear and sharp geometry is worth considerably more than a polished one that looks newer at a glance.

307How do you clean a Cartier?

A dry soft cloth for a dress watch on a strap. On a Santos or a bracelet-mounted watch, warm soapy water and a soft brush with the crown closed, then rinse and dry. Avoid solvents, ultrasonic cleaners and anything abrasive, and keep water away from any leather strap.

308How do you replace a Cartier battery?

Through a boutique or a competent watchmaker rather than a mall kiosk. The caseback needs correct tooling, the gaskets should be checked, and the watch should be pressure-tested afterwards. A badly done battery change is the most common cause of moisture damage on a quartz Cartier.

309How long does a Cartier last?

Indefinitely with maintenance, which is why Cartier watches from the 1920s and 1930s still trade actively. Quartz references depend on movement availability decades out, which is a real consideration on an older quartz piece and not on a mechanical one.

310How do you contact Cartier?

Through cartier.com, which carries a contact form, a boutique locator and the service enquiry route. Most enquiries route to a boutique rather than to the maison directly.

A note on scope. Hollywood Gems is an independent dealer and does not service or repair watches. Servicing questions should go to Cartier or a qualified watchmaker. For buying, selling or authentication, call (323) 991-9697.

Section 17

Selling a Cartier

What a Cartier fetches depends more on the specific reference than on the brand name, and on vintage it depends heavily on whether the dial is original and the case unpolished. Hollywood Gems buys outright rather than on consignment. The 12 answers below cover the process.

311Can you sell a Cartier watch?

Yes, and the market is deep because so many Cartiers exist. Routes include independent dealers, auction houses, marketplaces and private sale. Dealers pay less than a private buyer but pay immediately and carry the risk. Hollywood Gems buys outright: sell or trade a watch.

312Where can you sell a Cartier?

To an independent dealer for an immediate outright purchase, through an auction house for vintage, Privé or anything rare where bidding helps, or privately for the highest figure and the most work. Hollywood Gems buys outright with fast payouts and no consignment.

313Will Cartier buy back watches?

Cartier does not buy watches from the public. Some boutiques will take a piece in trade against a new purchase on their own terms. Otherwise selling means the secondary market.

314How much is my Cartier worth?

It depends on the reference, the metal, the movement, whether the case has been polished and whether the dial is original. Market values move. Send the reference and serial with clear photographs to info@hollywoodgems.com or call (323) 991-9697.

315What affects the offer on a Cartier?

Metal and movement set the band. Then condition of the case, whether it has been polished, originality of dial and hands, and completeness of box and papers. On vintage, which house made it matters too, with Cartier London pieces at the top.

316Do you need papers to sell a Cartier?

No, and on anything older than a decade their absence is normal. A full set raises the figure. On a recent watch, missing papers will be questioned more closely than on a vintage one.

317Should you service a Cartier before selling?

Usually not. The cost rarely returns in full in the offer and the buyer may prefer to choose their own watchmaker. Existing documented history helps. On a quartz watch, a fresh cell so it runs when shown is worth doing and costs very little.

318Should you polish a Cartier before selling?

No, and on vintage this is the most expensive mistake an owner can make. Polishing softens the case edges permanently and there is little metal to lose. A buyer can always have a watch refinished later; nobody can put metal back.

319Can you sell an inherited Cartier?

Yes, and inherited Cartiers turn up frequently, often vermeil Must pieces or gold Tanks from the 1970s and 1980s. Record the reference and serial first, and do not have it polished, redialled or serviced before getting it valued.

320How do you get a Cartier valued?

Send the reference, the serial and clear photographs of the dial, case, caseback and strap or bracelet, along with any paperwork. That is enough for an indicative figure, confirmed once the watch is inspected. Email info@hollywoodgems.com or call (323) 991-9697.

321Is it better to sell or trade a Cartier?

Trading works when you already know what you want next, and the trade value is often better than a straight cash figure. Selling outright makes sense when the money is the point. Hollywood Gems does both, so ask for the two numbers side by side.

322How does Hollywood Gems buy Cartier watches?

Outright purchase, not consignment. Send the model, reference and photographs, receive an offer, and payment follows once the watch is received and verified. Hollywood Gems also buys Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Omega, Hublot, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Tudor and Vacheron Constantin. Start at sell or trade.

Have a watch to sell? Send the model and reference to info@hollywoodgems.com or call (323) 991-9697. Outright purchase, fast payout.

Section 18

Cartier jewelry

Cartier was a jeweller for over fifty years before it made a wristwatch, and the jewellery side is larger than the watch side today. The Love bracelet, Juste un Clou and Trinity are among the most recognised pieces of jewellery in the world. Hollywood Gems sources Cartier jewelry on request rather than holding it in stock, and makes its own diamond jewelry for anyone who wants a piece rather than a name. The 18 answers below cover the collections.

323What is the Cartier Love bracelet?

An oval gold bangle in two halves, closed with screws and fitted using a small screwdriver. It sits close to the wrist and is designed to be worn permanently rather than taken on and off. It is among the best-known pieces of jewellery ever made.

324When was the Love bracelet created?

1969, at Cartier New York. The concept was that it would be screwed on by a partner and left there, which gave it a meaning no other bracelet had. Cartier originally sold it to couples and kept a register of who owned one.

325Who designed the Love bracelet?

Aldo Cipullo, an Italian designer working at Cartier New York. He also designed Juste un Clou two years later. Those two pieces between them account for a large share of Cartier's jewellery business more than fifty years on.

326Why does the Love bracelet need a screwdriver?

Because that is the design. The two halves are held by functioning screws, so the bracelet cannot be removed casually and the act of putting it on involves someone else. Cartier supplies the screwdriver with the bracelet.

327What sizes does the Love bracelet come in?

It runs through a range of numbered sizes measured in centimetres of wrist circumference. Because it is a rigid oval rather than an adjustable chain, getting the size right at purchase matters more than with almost any other piece of jewellery.

328How much is a Cartier Love bracelet?

At publication the classic gold model sat in the region of seven to eight thousand dollars at US retail, with the small model lower and diamond-set versions considerably higher. Gold prices move Cartier jewellery retail more than most people expect, so treat that as orientation.

329Does the Love bracelet hold value?

Better than most branded jewellery, because demand is constant and the gold content sets a floor. It still resells below retail, as jewellery generally does. Condition matters: a scratched bracelet worn daily for a decade is priced accordingly.

330What is Juste un Clou?

A bracelet shaped like a nail wrapped around the wrist, with the head and the point meeting. Created in 1971 and relaunched in 2012. The idea of turning a piece of hardware into gold jewellery is the same instinct that produced the Santos screws.

331Who designed Juste un Clou?

Aldo Cipullo, the same designer who created the Love bracelet two years earlier. Both take an industrial fastening and make it precious, which is a very New York idea and quite unlike anything Cartier Paris was doing.

332What is the Cartier Trinity ring?

Three interlocking bands in rose, yellow and white gold, created in 1924 and associated with the writer Jean Cocteau, who wore two of them. It has been in continuous production for a century and is one of the simplest designs Cartier has ever sold.

333What do the three Trinity bands mean?

The bands are commonly described as representing love, fidelity and friendship, one for each colour of gold. Cartier has used that framing in its own communication, though the ring was not created with a fixed doctrine attached. It works as much as an object as a symbol.

334What is the Cartier Panthère jewelry collection?

The panther motif, which entered Cartier's designs in 1914 and became central under Jeanne Toussaint from the 1930s. It runs across rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches, frequently with onyx spots and emerald eyes. It is the maison's defining animal.

335What is Cartier Clash?

A collection launched in 2019 built from studs, beads and square-cut clous arranged into articulated pieces that move with the wearer. It is a deliberately harder-edged look and one of the few genuinely new Cartier jewellery lines in recent decades.

336Is there Cartier Tank jewelry?

Not as a jewellery collection. The Tank is a watch, and searches for Tank jewellery usually mean either the watch itself or a Tank Française on its integrated bracelet, which reads as a bracelet with a dial. Cartier has not built a jewellery line around the name.

337Are Cartier Love bracelets unisex?

Yes, and they always have been. Cipullo designed it for couples, and the larger sizes and the wider model are worn widely by men. Cartier does not market it by gender.

338How can you tell a real Love bracelet?

Not from photographs. Counterfeits are widespread and have improved considerably, and the details people repeat online as tests are the first things copied. Have it assessed by a jeweller who can check the gold, the construction and the markings in person.

339Does Cartier resize the Love bracelet?

No. It is a rigid oval made in fixed sizes and it cannot be resized the way a chain or a ring can. That is why sizing at purchase matters so much, and why buying one second-hand means finding the right size rather than adjusting the one you find.

340Can you sell Cartier jewelry?

Yes, through jewellers, auction houses and specialist dealers. Gold content sets a floor and the Cartier name adds above it, with Love and Juste un Clou the most liquid. Hollywood Gems buys watches outright and will point you in the right direction on jewellery: call (323) 991-9697.

Section 19

Cartier compared to other brands

Cartier gets compared to houses it has nothing in common with, which produces a lot of bad advice. It is not a sports watch brand and it does not compete on movements. What it does own outright is shaped-case design and a century of it. The 14 answers below set out where each comparison lands.

341Is Cartier better than Rolex?

They are answering different questions. Rolex builds robust, accurate, highly liquid tool watches. Cartier builds shaped dress watches with jewellery-grade finishing. Rolex holds value more predictably; Cartier offers a design language nobody else has. Hollywood Gems carries both.

342Cartier or Rolex for a first watch?

Cartier if the budget is under Rolex's entry point, if you want something you can walk in and buy today, and if the watch will be worn with a shirt. Rolex if you want a mechanical daily watch that holds value and you are prepared to wait or pay a premium.

343Is Cartier better than Omega?

Omega is the stronger watchmaker: in-house anti-magnetic movements, chronometer certification and genuine sporting heritage. Cartier is the stronger design house and the more recognised name outside watch circles. Omega for the mechanics, Cartier for the object.

344Is Cartier better than Tudor?

Tudor delivers more watch for the money on any technical measure: in-house movements, chronometer certification, real water resistance. Cartier delivers a design and a name Tudor cannot. They compete for the same budget and almost never for the same buyer.

345Is Cartier a real watchmaker?

Yes, and the evidence is specific. Cartier builds its own calibres, runs a Fine Watchmaking division producing tourbillons and mystery movements, and had a flying tourbillon calibre certified with the Geneva Seal in 2008. The criticism made of Cartier usually predates all of that.

346Is Cartier taken seriously by collectors?

More so now than at any point in decades. Vintage Cartier and the Privé programme have moved the maison to the centre of collecting conversation, and shaped cases are where a lot of serious money has gone. The dismissive view of Cartier is now the unfashionable one.

347Cartier Tank or Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso?

The two great rectangular watches, from 1917 and 1931. The Reverso has the better movement and the swivelling case. The Tank has the purer shape and the wider recognition. The Reverso is the watch enthusiast's answer and the Tank is the one everybody knows. Hollywood Gems carries both.

348Cartier Santos or Royal Oak?

Both are squared integrated-bracelet watches with exposed bezel screws, and the Santos did it 68 years first. The Royal Oak is finished to a considerably higher standard and priced accordingly. The Santos is the more practical watch and a fraction of the money.

349Which brand makes the best dress watch?

On pure watchmaking, Patek Philippe's Calatrava and Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony. On design, the Cartier Tank, which has outlasted and outsold both. A dress watch is judged by how it looks under a cuff, and on that measure Cartier has never been beaten.

350Is Cartier more of a fashion brand?

It is a jewellery maison that also makes watches, which is not the same thing as a fashion brand. Fashion brands license their name onto watches built by someone else. Cartier owns a Swiss manufacture, builds its own calibres and has produced Geneva Seal complications.

351Why do watch collectors love Cartier?

Because of the shapes. Almost every other house makes round watches, and Cartier has a century of Tanks, Crashes, Cloches, Tortues and Baignoires that exist nowhere else. For a collector who already owns round watches, Cartier is the only place to go next.

352Is Cartier better value than Patek Philippe?

At the entry point, considerably, because Patek has no equivalent of a three-thousand-dollar Tank Must. At the top, a Privé Crash and a complicated Patek are both scarce and expensive for different reasons. Value depends entirely on which end of each range you are comparing.

353Which luxury watch brand is most recognisable?

Rolex, followed by Cartier. Cartier's advantage is that it is recognised by people who have no interest in watches at all, because the name reaches them through jewellery. Very few watch brands have that.

354What is the poor man's Cartier Tank?

The phrase gets applied to any number of rectangular watches at lower prices, and there are good ones. It is a dismissive way of describing watches that stand up perfectly well on their own. Worth noting that the Tank Must itself sits below the entry point of most Swiss mechanical brands.

Weighing two brands? Hollywood Gems carries Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Omega, Hublot, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Tudor and Vacheron Constantin. Call (323) 991-9697 or browse all watches.

Section 20

Culture and history

Cartier has been attached to people rather than to events: a Brazilian aviator, an American first lady, a pop artist, an abdicated king. That is a different kind of cultural presence from sponsoring a tennis tournament, and it is more durable. The table lists the pieces with documented histories and the 18 answers below cover them.

Table 11 · Documented Cartier owners

Owner Piece Note
Alberto Santos-Dumont Santos, 1904 The watch was made for him; the model carries his name
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Gold Tank, 1963 A gift from Stanislaw Radziwill, engraved, sold at auction in 2017
Andy Warhol Tank Source of the line about not wearing a Tank to tell the time
The Duke of Windsor Watches and high jewellery Among Cartier's most significant twentieth-century clients
Diana, Princess of Wales Tank Française and earlier Tanks Worn regularly through the 1990s

355Who wore the first Cartier wristwatch?

Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviator, from 1904. Louis Cartier made it for him because he could not read a pocket watch while flying. It went on public sale in 1911, by which point Santos-Dumont was famous enough that the name sold the watch.

356Which Cartier did Jackie Kennedy own?

A gold Tank given to her in 1963 by her brother-in-law Stanislaw Radziwill, engraved on the caseback to mark a long walk the two had completed. She wore it for decades and it became the single most famous Tank in existence.

357How much did Jackie Kennedy's Tank sell for?

It sold at Christie's in New York in 2017 for a figure well into six digits, far above the estimate. The buyer was later revealed to be Kim Kardashian. It remains one of the highest prices paid for a Cartier wristwatch at auction.

358Which Cartier did Andy Warhol wear?

He owned several Tanks and wore them constantly. He is the source of the best-known line about the model: that he did not wear a Tank to tell the time, he wore it because it was the watch to wear.

359Did Andy Warhol wind his Tank?

Reportedly not. The story that his Tanks were rarely wound and rarely running is widely repeated and fits what he said about wearing one. Whether it was literally true of every watch he owned is another matter.

360Which Cartier did Princess Diana wear?

She wore Cartier Tanks regularly, including a Tank Française in the 1990s, and the association did a great deal for the model's visibility at the time. Her watches are among the most photographed Cartiers of the period.

361Which Cartier did Muhammad Ali wear?

Ali appears on most lists of famous Cartier wearers, but the documentation is thinner than for Kennedy, Warhol or the Duke of Windsor. Treat specific claims about which reference he owned with caution unless provenance is attached.

362Which Cartier did the Duke of Windsor own?

He and Wallis Simpson were among Cartier's most significant twentieth-century clients, commissioning both watches and high jewellery including the pieces that established the panther motif. Their collection sold at auction decades later and reframed how the market valued Cartier.

363Which celebrities wear Cartier?

A very long list across film, music and sport, and it reaches further than most watch brands because the jewellery does as much work as the watches. Cartier does maintain formal ambassador relationships, so an appearance does not always mean a personal purchase.

364Does Cartier use brand ambassadors?

Yes, unlike some of the traditional Swiss houses. Cartier runs ambassador relationships across film and the arts and markets far more visibly than a maison like Patek Philippe does. That is consistent with being a jeweller rather than a watchmaker first.

365What is the Cartier Collection?

The maison's own heritage collection, assembled from 1983 by buying back significant historic pieces at auction and privately. It runs to thousands of objects and travels to museums internationally. It is why Cartier can mount exhibitions of its own history that most brands could not.

366What is the Cartier panther?

The maison's animal symbol, appearing first in 1914 as a spotted motif and developed into full sculptural form from the 1930s. It runs across jewellery, watches and objects, and it is the most identifiable animal in the jewellery trade.

367Why is the panther the Cartier symbol?

Jeanne Toussaint drove it. She led Cartier's high jewellery from 1933, was nicknamed La Panthère, and turned an occasional motif into the maison's signature. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor commissioned some of the defining pieces.

368Who was Jeanne Toussaint?

Cartier's director of high jewellery from 1933 and one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century design. She shaped the panther, the Tutti Frutti style and much of what the maison is still known for. Louis Cartier gave her the job and the nickname.

369What is the Cartier Tutti Frutti style?

Jewellery set with carved coloured gemstones — emeralds, rubies and sapphires cut as leaves and berries — drawing on Indian jewellery the Cartier brothers encountered in the 1910s and 1920s. Jacques Cartier's travels to India are the direct source.

370Has Cartier appeared in films?

Frequently, usually as shorthand for a particular kind of money: old rather than new, European rather than American. The Tank in particular has been used that way for decades. Cartier's cultural presence has come through people wearing the watches rather than through placement.

371Is Cartier popular with women collectors?

Very, and it has one of the strongest followings among women collectors of any watch brand. Sizing that has never been rigidly gendered, shapes that read as jewellery, and a maison whose history is full of women as clients and designers all contribute.

372Why has Cartier become collectable?

Because the market ran out of room in steel sports watches and looked elsewhere. Cartier had a century of shapes nobody else made, a serious archive, and prices that looked reasonable next to Patek and Audemars Piguet. The Privé programme gave collectors something to chase and the rest followed.
